Maintenance Worker I/II – Aquatics Maintenance
The City of Palmdale is seeking a skilled and motivated individual to join our Aquatics Maintenance team. The role supports the maintenance of four municipal pools, one splashpad and DryTown Water Park, ensuring all facilities are clean, chemically balanced, safe and comfortable for guests of all ages. This position requires a commitment to outdoor, fast‑paced work, and a passion for creating memorable community experiences.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Maintenance Worker I
– Entry‑level, routine and repetitive duties performed under close supervision. Employees gain experience to work more independently over time.
Maintenance Worker II
– Journey level, requiring specific experience and less supervision. Positions are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from Worker I or by qualified outside candidates.
Essential Duties
Oversee and inspect the work of contract maintenance workers; document daily activities.
Inspect areas for safety, appearance and vandalism; enforce proper completion of work.
Perform installation, maintenance, design, repair and construction duties related to area assignment.
Conduct plumbing, concrete, carpentry and basic electrical repairs and maintenance.
Service heating and air conditioning units, paint city buildings and facilities.
Inspect pool and aquatic facilities for safety; perform water quality testing, adjust treatment processes and maintain water quality for pools, fountains and other features.
Maintain and remove trees and stumps for right‑of‑way clearance; perform weed abatement and vegetation control.
Operate power equipment such as weed whips, chainsaws, gas blowers and tractors; perform herbicide and rodent abatement duties.
Perform street painting, traffic striping, sign replacement and graffiti removal.
Carry out block wall restoration, sidewalk and driveway repair, utility enclosure work and storm drainage maintenance.
Remove trash and debris from roadways; set up traffic control for safe work zones.
Clean and clear park grounds, structures and parkways; prepare facilities for special events.
Install, maintain and repair irrigation facilities and backflow prevention devices.
Operate maintenance vehicles and equipment; use hand tools; oversee light equipment operation.
Maintain logs, inventory materials, and order supplies within guidelines using electronic devices.
Apply safe work practices and clean tools, chemicals and equipment.
Assist other department crews; respond to emergency and on‑call situations.
Perform related work as required.
Experience & Training / License & Certification Maintenance Worker I Education: High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent. Experience: One year performing maintenance or repair work for an agency, company or organization.
Maintenance Worker II Education: High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent. Experience: Two years performing maintenance or repair work; or one year as a Worker I with the City of Palmdale.
Licenses/Certifications: Valid California driver’s license required; applicant must be eligible for City insurance coverage. Within 6 months of hire, must become a Los Angeles County Certified Swimming Pool Service Technician (current certification preferred).
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of landscaping chemicals, tools and methods; basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, asphalt and concrete concepts; power equipment safety.
Ability to perform construction and maintenance work; operate hand tools and power equipment safely and efficiently.
Follow verbal and written instructions; establish working relationships; communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
Learn to use basic computer, electronic and mobile device functions efficiently.
Working Conditions Physical Demands: Frequent heavy manual labor, standing, bending, squatting, climbing ladders, reaching, twisting, kneeling and repetitive hand movements. Required to lift up to 90 pounds occasionally.
Vision: Continuous overall vision; near and far vision required for safety inspections and equipment operation.
Environment: Outdoor work in all weather; exposure to chemicals; use of loud power tools; possible use of motorized vehicles in traffic. Employees must be available for on‑call and after‑hours emergencies, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
