Under general direction of the Public Works Operations Manager and assigned under direct supervision of the Streets Manager and Streets Foreman, performs street construction, maintenance, and repairs.

Essential Functions

Operates and maintains various street maintenance equipment, such as backhoes, excavators, street sweepers, asphalt rollers, snowplows, and dump trucks.

Conducts routine inspections and preventive maintenance on a variety of hand tools, light and heavy‑duty equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Performs tasks such as street resurfacing, asphalt patching, snow removal, and ice control.

Conducts concrete work involving patching, repairs, replacement, and new installations.

Installs, repairs, and replaces street signs and guardrail as needed.

Paves, stripes, and marks roads for traffic guidance and safety.

Assists in the setup and cleanup of work zones, including traffic control measures and signage.

Performs minor repairs and adjustments on equipment as needed, or reports maintenance issues to appropriate personnel.

Maintains accurate records of work performed, equipment usage, and maintenance activities.

Handles minor building and facilities maintenance repairs, and miscellaneous repairs and maintenance.

Follows established safety procedures and regulations while operating equipment and working in various weather conditions.

Communicates effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate tasks and ensure job completion according to schedule.

Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, as well as local regulations governing street maintenance operations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education – High school diploma or G.E.D.

Experience:

Streets Equipment Operator I – One year of experience in heavy equipment or training in street construction, maintenance, and repairs preferred.

Streets Equipment Operator II – Three years of experience with knowledge of street construction or related maintenance and repairs. Experience with operating basic heavy equipment. Snowplow experience preferred.

Streets Equipment Operator III – Five years of experience and proficiency in street construction or related maintenance and repairs. Strong leadership skills and capable of mentoring level I and II operators. Capable of loading, unloading and transporting all heavy equipment. Competent and skilled with operating a wide variety of heavy equipment. Snowplow experience preferred.

License and Certification:

Streets Equipment Operator I: Valid Utah Driver License. Must obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver License with Tanker Endorsement within 6‑month probationary period. After employment – Flagger certification required within one year.

Streets Equipment Operator II: Valid Utah Driver License. Must obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker Endorsement within 6‑month probationary period. After employment – Heavy Equipment Training, Flagger, Forklift, Traffic Control Technician certifications required within one year.

Streets Equipment Operator III: Valid Utah Driver License. Must obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker Endorsement within 6‑month probationary period. After employment – Flagger, Forklift, Traffic Control Supervisor, RSI Guardrail, OSHA 10 Hour, Heavy Equipment Training (Loader, Backhoe, Lube Snowblower) certifications required within one year.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Knowledge of policies, procedures, equipment, and materials required for effective street‑related operations, maintenance, and repairs.

General safe practices and procedures required.

State of Utah Commercial Driver License rules and regulations.

Skilled with equipment operations, maintenance, and repair tasks.

Strong math, reading, analytical, organizational, and planning skills for work assignments.

Interpersonal relations skills to deal effectively with the public and other city employees.

Communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions And Physical Demands Position requires working outdoors and a variety of physical activities, including talking, hearing, seeing, walking, sitting, standing, reaching, using hands/fingers, climbing or balancing, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Workers are exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, dust, grease, high noise, and may drive vehicles. Must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
