Summary A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Typical Seasonal Entry-On-Duty Period March – November. The season may be extended or reduced due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: March 22, 2026.

Duties

Service as a Maintenance Worker (Trails) in the Resource Management Division at multiple districts of Natchez Trace Parkway.

Perform trail maintenance and repairs.

Operate and maintain trail equipment.

Mark trails to meet public needs.

Deliver trail materials and supplies to work locations.

Respond to trail problems reported by visitors (e.g., downed timber).

Work with youth groups and volunteers on trail rehabilitation projects.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Participation in Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program.

Possession of a valid State‑issued driver’s license; required to submit a photocopy and certify qualifications as described.

Wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; uniform allowance provided.

Work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work may be required.

Travel overnight up to two nights per month and obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Complete required training and maintain a government charge card with travel/purchase authority.

Qualifications

Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT).

Volunteer Experience Experience, including paid and unpaid, through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can be credited.

Education No substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade positions.

Physical Demands Heavy physical exertion including bending, lifting, using hand and power tools. Frequently lifting/carrying objects up to 100 pounds, carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons, using hammers, shovels. Frequently walks up to 20 miles daily. Must not have medical conditions that complicate remote work for extended periods.

Working Conditions Must live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas with small numbers of people. Work outdoors in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty; hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, downed trees, and working around machinery.

CTAP/ICTAP Statement Current surplus and former displaced Federal employees with special priority selection rights under CTAP or ICTAP must have a well‑qualified status based on OPM standards and competencies.
