About the Agency The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) maintains nearly 2,000 miles of County‑maintained roadways. The Office of Storm Drain Maintenance (OSDM) performs roadway repairs, stormwater management, and related tasks.

Position Summary This is skilled craft work for the

CDL Operator II

( Equipment Operator 2A ) Grade A15. Incumbents safely operate moderate‑complex equipment on construction and highway maintenance projects, performing tasks such as grading, raw material handling, snow and ice removal, and safety inspections.

Key Responsibilities

Operate all vehicles and equipment designated for the Equipment Operator II category used on construction and maintenance projects (e.g., grader, backhoe, dump truck, loader, paver).

Maintain vehicles/equipment in good condition, performing cleaning and preventative maintenance.

Perform daily “walk‑around” safety inspections and pre‑ and post‑inspections of equipment.

Assist crew in semi‑skilled tasks such as stump cutting, root pruning, and leaf vacuuming.

Operate snowplow and spreader equipment to remove snow and ice during winter.

Maintain records, logs, and work order forms.

Participate in the Department’s Snow and Ice Control Program and emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications

One year as an Equipment Operator I or completion of a standard grade school course.

Two (2) years of experience operating light to heavy power equipment.

A valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements.

Successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for this class of work.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency operating tractor with boom, skid steer, truck with mowers, gradall excavator, front end loader, backhoe, and lowboy trailer (hook‑up, driving).

Conditions of Employment

Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency.

Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in all duties.

Pass preemployment checks (reference, background, drug screening).

Serve as an essential employee, reporting during standard or non‑standard hours and during emergencies.

Respond to emergency service calls on a 24‑hour basis.
