Position Purpose The job of Business Director is to plan, organize and direct overall financial operations for Converse County School District #1, including internal and external payroll functions; develop and maintain the annual budget and long‑range financial projections; play a central role in district planning and analysis of current programs, support systems, and expenditures; and administer business‑function services including property control and food service.

This job reports to the Superintendent of Schools.

Essential Functions

Acts as financial advisor to the Board of Education, providing direction and support, making recommendations, maximizing the efficient use of funds, and ensuring operations are within budget and comply with board policy and state laws.

Advises district administrators on budget and financial issues, major maintenance projects, recreation projects, and more.

Advises the Superintendent and Board on insurance, risk management, real‑estate holdings, income statements, cost reports, internal audits, hiring, and evaluating business office personnel.

Analyzes benefits policies of other districts and organizations to establish competitive benefits programs.

Assists with various grant budgets, monitoring development and implementation of district grant applications, managing expenditures, account balances, and reporting to issuing agencies.

Conducts workshops and in‑service trainings to internal and external groups on software processes, legislative changes, and financial guidance.

Coordinates financial processes such as budget development, financial reports, electronic transaction recording, bank reconciliations, investment oversight, and purchase control.

Interacts with county and state organizations to stay abreast of school finance reform.

Maintains fiscal records, including federal/state payments and reports, fixed‑asset inventory, public disclosures, and capital property records.

Monitors fixed‑asset inventory for accuracy and location within district sites.

Oversees year‑end closing processes, including general ledger reviews, signing of financial reports, certification of property‑tax reports, and signatory duties for bank accounts.

Participates in workshops, meetings, and seminars to gather information, identify issues, develop recommendations, and serve as district representative.

Responds to liability claims filed against the district, identifying relevant issues and implementing action plans.

Serves as communications spokesperson regarding district financial health and goals.

Supervises staff assignments and business‑office personnel through the district’s evaluation process.

Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Experience Job‑related experience within a specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility is required. Bachelor’s degree in a related area.

Education Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or accounting and at least five years of business management experience in a large, diverse organization, including supervisory experience.

Equivalency Experience in directing and coordinating the business functions of an organization.
