Department Overview The Department of Philosophy offers students the following opportunities: a general Philosophy Major, a Pre-Law Option, a Religious Studies Option, and minors in Philosophy, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Middle East Studies.
Position Summary The department seeks qualified candidates to teach undergraduate courses such as:
PHIL 120: Contemporary Conflicts of Morals
Other classes as identified to fulfill current students’ educational goals
Instructor Responsibilities Temporary faculty members are responsible for adherence to university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph 2. Instructors prepare, deliver, and grade lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and midterm and final exams. Classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the semester in the mode assigned (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).
Conditional Appointment Appointments are contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to the “Order of Work,” with tenure-line faculty first and new lecturer appointees last. Appointees must demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States.
Compensation Salary ranges are established by the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code 2358). For temporary faculty with a Master’s degree, the range is $5,507–$6,677 per month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum.
Anticipated Semester The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed based on enrollment and funding. The pool will remain in place for two academic terms; beyond that, applicants must reapply.
Fall 2025: August 18, 2025 – December 22, 2025
Spring 2026: January 15, 2026 – May 22, 2026
Required Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree in Philosophy, Religious Studies, or related field
Experience: Demonstrated commitment to excellence, merit, talent, diversity, accessibility, and equal opportunity
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in Philosophy or Religious Studies
Commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence, evidenced by prior teaching experience and evaluations
Successful undergraduate teaching experience
