Job Description Purpose and Scope The PT Interpreter II functions as an advanced‑level, professional interpreter for LSC students, faculty, staff and administration and for visitors who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing to maintain compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Interpreters strive to advance sign language proficiency to provide the highest level of service possible.

Interpreters support and promote all persons’ right to communication equity in learning and workplace environments.

Essential Job Functions

Provides Sign Language translation (voice and signing) and related formats:

for clients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing,

for all LSC students, faculty, staff and administration, and for visitors to LSC,

in all requested Lone Star College locations and settings, and

at the appropriate language and register level

Analyzes source language content, meaning, and intent to accurately deliver information to the target audience.

Communicates client information, client status, and any concerns or challenges to supervisor.

Actively researches situations (and potential situations) involving new, technical, or complex information to gain an understanding of what will/may be interpreted.

Acts as a mentor for level one Interpreters.

Ethically models positive and inclusive employee behavior.

Attends and actively participates in department meetings and activities.

Continuously reviews current processes and procedures, and shares challenges and improvement ideas with supervisor and team.

Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong fluency in both Sign Language and English with the ability to preserve meaning, tone, and emotional value, and a firm grasp of both languages including idioms.

Ability to effectively interpret in higher‑level (BEI Advanced or equivalent) situations.

Ability to effectively mentor lower‑level Interpreters.

Willingness to accept assignments at a variety of times and locations, including evenings and weekends.

Maintain confidentiality and discretion.

Knowledge of Sign Language structure, English composition, grammar, and word meaning.

Adherence to LSC policy on Students with Disability Rights, FERPA release rules, and related regulations.

Knowledge of the Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct adopted by Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Thorough knowledge of Deaf culture and community.

Basic computer literacy: typing, internet search, word processing, and scheduling with proprietary software.

Professional and friendly attitude with quick rapport building.

Strong interpersonal, communication, tact, diplomacy, and service skills.

Sensitivity to cultural differences.

Excellent listening and customer service skills.

Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.

Physical Abilities

Uses fingers, hands, and arms to communicate Sign Language for extended periods.

Specific vision abilities: close and distance vision, color perception, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Requires sitting, standing, and walking to maintain line of sight and provide services in campus tours, clinical or other settings.

Ability to receive detailed oral information and locate sound discrimination.

Ability to convey detailed or important instructions accurately in English and Sign Language.

Work Schedule and Conditions

Assignments occur at varied times and locations in the LSC service area, including evenings and weekends.

PC workstation in a LAN Windows environment, calculator, phone and general office equipment. Incumbent may use video phone and/or sign language software.

Internal and external contacts as needed.

Work occurs in climate‑controlled office, classroom, meeting, convention, and potentially indoor/outdoor laboratory environments with minimal safety hazard. May include close quarters and remote services.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of related work experience, or equivalent education and experience.

Active BEI Advanced certification or higher, or active BEI‑recognized equivalent certification.

Reliable mode of transportation to travel between assignments within the LSC Service Area.

Salary Hourly Pay Rate is $56.44
