POSITION TITLE:
Communications Specialist

Position Summary The Dallas County R-1 School District is seeking a skilled Communications Specialist to lead all district communication and public relations efforts. This individual will work to ensure consistent, engaging, and timely communication with families, staff, and the broader community. The Communications Specialist will maintain the district website, manage all social media accounts, and cultivate strong relationships with local media partners to promote positive stories and district achievements. This position plays a vital role in shaping the public perception of our schools and telling the story of our students, staff, and community.
Key Responsibilities External Communications
Manage and regularly update the district website.
Oversee all district social media platforms ensuring consistent, professional, and engaging content.
Coordinate communication through School Messenger and other parent notification systems.
Serve as a liaison with local media outlets (e.g., newspaper, radio) to promote school events, celebrations, and district news.
Develop and distribute district newsletters and press releases.
Internal Communications
Collaborate with district and building leadership to communicate key updates to staff.
Assist with internal messaging platforms and staff newsletters.
Support emergency and crisis communications as needed.
Capture and share photos, videos, and stories that highlight the work happening in schools across the district.
Marketing & Branding
Support the district’s branding efforts through consistent messaging and visual identity.
Create marketing materials, event signage, and promotional content.
Stay informed on current communication trends and tools to continuously improve district outreach.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field (preferred)
Experience in marketing or communications preferred (school or education experience is a plus)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficient with website content management systems, social media platforms, and graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)
Experience with photography and video creation/editing is a plus
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
Must be available for occasional evening or weekend events
Work Environment This is a full time position requiring availability during school hours and occasionally after-hours for school events or urgent communications.
