Position Description Summary / Purpose The Assistant Athletic Trainer is primarily responsible for assisting the head athletic trainer in the management of the sports medicine department. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with the direction and coordination of all coverage and services of the athletic training room, assisting with the management of student‑athlete medical care, assisting with insurance procedures, and rehabilitation of student‑athletes. The athletic training staff will work within the guidelines set forth by the NATA, NCAA, and the State of Connecticut to ensure the health and welfare of the University of Bridgeport intercollegiate student athletes.

Essential Job Functions / Primary Responsibilities

Assist with the day‑to‑day operations of the athletic training room.

Evaluation/treatment of injury/illness to intercollegiate student‑athletes; design and modify appropriate individual rehab of post‑surgical/post‑injury conditions.

Provide emergency medical coverage during athletic events, practices, and travel for teams; refer ill/injured athletes to health services/team physicians/consultants regarding injuries/illnesses/care.

Conduct all work in a safe manner and ensure all safety practices are followed.

Administration of the department’s athletic injury accident insurance policy; maintain medical/administrative records.

Clinical supervision for the affiliated curriculum athletic training education program.

Communicate effectively with coaches and student athletes on injury status, playing limitations, counseling, recovery, and health conditions.

Other Functions

Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.

Continues professional development and training; keeps current with trends.

Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort.
