Offer Description
At the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria we are looking in the Integrated and advanced manufacturing research group for a full time position for a PhD candidate. The position is initially limited to a period of 3 years. An extension will be sought if suitable. The Integrated and Advanced Manufacturing research group (CFI) comprises 20 researchers from the Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Process Engineering Dpts. The group has undertaken a considerable amount of research related to Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques mainly involving MEX, PBF, VPP, metal Atomic diffusion (ADAM), electrospinning, electroforming, rapid tooling and vacuum casting, as well as on polymer processing (injection moulding, compression moulding, rotational moulding, extrusion) and bio-composites. The doctoral thesis will be in the context of the general MSCA-DN project RENOVATE (Regenerative engineering innovation in early intervention of osteoarthritis). This project aims the following main objectives: Define patient-specific key functional and mechanical requirements for large osteochondral scaffolds. Produce biocompatible porous 3D structures that mimic osteochondral tissue native hierarchical structures starting from alternative biomaterials, bioinks and nanocomposites. Produce multi-material graded OC scaffolds according to patient-specific key functional and mechanical requirements developing a novel optimisation methodology to produce Functionally Graded Additive Manufacturing (FGAM) large osteochondral scaffolds. Description of the proposed doctoral individual project : The doctoral candidate will carry out the individual project titled: “ Additive Manufacturing Scaffolds with Piezoelectric and Drug Delivery Coatings” Objectives: To produce scaffolds with piezoelectric properties and a drug delivery system DC9 will 1) develop, by mechanosynthesis innovative Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3–(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 piezoelectric ceramic materials with perovskite structure (BCZT); 2) develop a drug delivery system based on PCL microspheres containing anti-inflammatory agents (dexamethasone and/or other corticosteroids, amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin); 3) design and manufacture by AM optimized PLA/HAp/CaCO3 composite scaffolds with piezoelectric properties and apply the drug delivery coating; 4) carry out the in vitro test of the developed scaffolds under external mechanical stimuli (ultrasound or perfusion flow bioreactor). The doctoral candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program “Chemical, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering” (University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), and the main supervisor will be Dr. Mario Monzón (orcid 0000-0003-2736-7905), and the co-supervisor will be Dr. Rocio Moriche (orcid 0000-0002-8392-6647). Secondments to other partners of the consortium will be carried out during the project in different periods (total of 6 months). Salary and allowances Duration of the employment: 36 months since 1st of June 2026 (expected date of the recruitment) Living allowance: 3.833,56 € Gross per month (46.002,72 € / year). The net salary will result from deducting all compulsory (employer/employee) national social security contributions as well as direct taxes. Where to apply
