Job Description To enforce the law, provide service, information and aid to all citizens as circumstances require, prevent crime, suppress disturbances, investigate criminal offenses, and arrest offenders. Responsible for enforcement duties for the protection, safety and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and all property within the area controlled and jurisdictioned by Texas A&M University-San Antonio, including primary jurisdiction in all counties where the Texas A&M System has real property interest and secondary jurisdiction in all other Texas counties. Exercises independent judgment within the limits prescribed by law, institutional rules and regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Serve as a Campus Security Authority in compliance with the Federal Clery Act.

Makes frequent vehicle, bicycle or foot patrols of the campus to provide a police presence, ensuring a sense of security for the campus community and effecting active enforcement of Texas Motor Vehicle and Penal Code Laws and Texas A&M University-San Antonio regulations.

Conducts pro‑active enforcement, particularly during night hours, checking campus buildings for security violations such as unlocked doors or unauthorized personnel.

Investigates all complaints of alleged offenses or other violations, conducting comprehensive interviews of complainants and witnesses.

Secure crime scenes, collect physical evidence, and ensure evidence is marked and preserved for court proceedings.

Questions all witnesses and provides testimony in criminal courts.

Confers with prosecuting attorneys and maintains confidential information.

Preserves peace by lawful means, interceding to prevent or suppress crime when authorized by law.

Executes all lawful process and arrests offenders with or without a warrant when authorized by law.

Investigates criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals and recover stolen or lost property.

Enforces traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody or issuing citations or warnings.

Investigates motor vehicle collisions.

Prepares written reports on law enforcement and police activities.

Responds to all calls, whether emergency, injuries, or criminal in nature.

In physical injury incidents, obtains EMT services, remains at the scene, and assists medical personnel.

Provides escort services to campus personnel, especially at night, ensuring personal safety.

Unlocks vehicles upon request using available tools without incurring financial liability.

Provides authorized access to campus facilities to authorized persons, especially at night.

Serves as a liaison with the campus population, establishing rapport and maintaining communication pathways.

Directs motor vehicle traffic during congestion and provides similar services to local authorities adjacent to campus.

Performs other duties as assigned, such as responding to disturbances in offices, classrooms, or other facilities.

Required Education And Experience

High school diploma or higher in related field.

One (1) year of related experience.

Preferred Education And Experience

Associate's degree.

Three (3) years of higher education or other campus law enforcement experience.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Must successfully complete the Texas A&M University-San Antonio Police Officer Field Training program.

Proficient with all equipment used in performance of duties, including firearms, restraints, less lethal weapons, vehicles, communication equipment, computers, radar, and video equipment.

Demonstrates effective problem‑solving ability.

Capable of providing credible testimony in court.

Exposed to outdoor weather conditions.

May be required to work day or night shifts, with varying days off and holidays.

Work involves a degree of hazard.

Has the physical and mental capabilities to perform police duties such as running, jumping, carrying, reaching, and other physical tasks.

Understands state and federal laws and university policies.

Is thoroughly cognizant of proper use of force and deadly force.

Prepared to maintain required hours for certification and further certifications.

Understands Clery reportable crimes, timely warnings, and emergency notification requirements.

Registrations, Certifications, And Licenses

Meet minimum licensing standards required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Hold a Basic Proficiency certificate from TCOLE Rule 217.1 and Texas A&M System Regulation 34.06.01.

Hold an Intermediate, Advanced, or Master Proficiency certificate from TCOLE Rule 221.1.

Maintain a valid driver’s license not subject to suspension.

Other Requirements Or Other Factors

Possess an active, valid Peace Officer License issued by TCOLE with less than a two‑year break in service.

Comply with Texas A&M System policies and TCOLE standards for age, physical, mental, and educational requirements.

Successfully pass medical and psychological tests.

Be fingerprinted and subject to a background check of local, state, and national records.

Never convicted of family violence offenses, prohibited from operating a motor vehicle, prohibited from possessing firearms, no dishonorable discharge from the military, and a U.S. Citizen.
