Program Overview The Office of College Access Programs provides support to middle and high school students to prepare, apply, pay, and enroll in college. The Office offers a broad range of high‑quality college preparatory services to students, parents, and educators.

Key Programs

Gear UP

The GEAR UP (GU) program is a college preparatory program designed to significantly increase the number of low‑income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post‑secondary education. The program provides early college preparation and awareness services through tutoring, mentoring, academic advising/counseling, career/college exploration, academic workshops and other support services for students, educators, and parents.

Trio Talent Search

The Talent Search Program is a college preparatory program that provides academic support services to economically disadvantaged and/or first‑generation middle and high school students. The goal is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. The program provides academic support services through career awareness, college workshops, field trips, and financial aid counseling.

Trio Upward Bound

The Upward Bound (UB) Program is a college preparatory program designed to provide academic support services and educational opportunities to economically disadvantaged and/or first‑generation high school students. The goal is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from postsecondary institutions. Upward Bound provides Saturday Academy classes, college preparatory workshops, tutoring, academic counseling/mentoring, cultural enrichment activities, and college campus tours.

Trio Upward Bound Math & Science

The Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Program strengthens students’ math and science skills. The goal is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in these fields. UBMS provides Saturday Academy classes, summer programs with intensive training, counseling and advisement, exposure to university faculty members, and participant‑conducted scientific research under faculty guidance.

Trio Educational Opportunity Centers

The Educational Opportunity Center helps high school seniors, graduates, and college dropouts make career choices and set educational goals. Services are available at no cost to U.S. citizens who meet Federal eligibility requirements. Information on college admissions, financial aid, and FAFSA preparation is provided.

Minimum Eligibility

Full‑time undergraduate (minimum 12 semester hours) or graduate (minimum 9 semester hours) student in the current session. For summer sessions, students must be registered for the upcoming fall semester if not enrolled in a summer session.

Cannot work more than 20 hours per week—including all compensation received from Fayetteville State University.

This position is not for Work‑Study students. Work‑Study students must apply through the Office of Financial Aid.

Additional Information Esteemed students may serve in various capacity in student‑run programs and assist faculty, administrators, and outreach groups. Participants will be required to complete background checks, including criminal, employment, reference, academic, and credit verifications as applicable.
