General Description of Position
This safety sensitive position (SS) is responsible for enforcement of the City’s animal ordinances and state laws, investigations of all animal cruelty, animal bites or attacks, controlling and caring for strays and abandoned animals, eradication of nuisance wildlife, and educating the public on care and laws of animal ownership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide food, water, and sterilize kennels against disease (daily).
Pick up abandoned or stray animals (daily).
Provide medical care to animals, including inoculations (as needed).
Respond to complaints about dangerous or vicious dogs (daily).
Provide clerical tasks, answer phone, service calls, and log information (daily).
Issue warnings and court citations (as needed).
Investigate dog or cat bites or attacks, animal cruelty, or hoarding cases (as needed).
Trap and eradicate nuisance wildlife (as needed).
Act as certified euthanist, euthanize animals, and maintain records (as needed).
Respond to emergency calls after hours (as needed).
Maintain quarantined animals for health department officials (as needed).
Testify in court on animal cases (as needed).
Provide first responder care to injured animals in the field (as needed).
Handle livestock problems (as needed).
Operate a city vehicle for essential functions.
Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to conduct each essential duty satisfactorily. The following represent required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Education and Experience
– Equivalent to four years high school or GED, with emphasis in office skills, shop skills, or related areas, plus 12–18 months related experience or training, or equivalent combination.
Communication Skills
– Effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small-group situations with customers, clients, general public, and other employees.
Mathematical Skills
– Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rates, ratios, and percentages; prepare and interpret bar graphs.
Critical Thinking Skills
– Not indicated.
Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
– Must be 21 years of age to obtain ACIC certification; valid driver’s license.
Preferred Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
– ALETA law enforcement graduate.
