Job Description This position requires an individual who can operate a Heyl Patterson barge unloading apparatus, dual lane Hopper barge uncovering/covering unit and barge winching systems safely and productively while directing operational responsibilities for the riverside barge unloading crew. The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to operate all equipment and complete all responsibilities included in the Terminal Operator 2 and Terminal Operator 3 positions.

Primary Responsibilities

Active participant of the facility SHE programs, maintaining a good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures, and ensuring all applicable requirements are adhered to.

Mastery of the safe operational capabilities of the Heyl Patterson barge Unloader and barge winching systems.

Operate the Unloader and winching systems safely and productively in all conditions, including high/low river conditions, inclement weather and over a wide range of grains and grain by‑products.

Understand the overall barge unloading process to direct and manage barge fleet movements, barge cover handling operations and tractor clean‑up operations.

Recognize and identify various grains and grain by‑products and communicate that information to the control room operator before each barge unload operation begins.

Complete unload records for each barge accurately and completely for the HP operator or cover station position.

Communicate directly with control room operators to plan and execute barge‑unloading operations.

Communicate directly with the fleet tug operator to safely and productively move barges from the fleet into the barge slip and then take empty barges back to the fleet.

Communicate the operational status of the Unloader and winching systems to maintenance personnel, recognizing deficiencies and notifying the maintenance group.

Operate the Unloader in a manner consistent with LDC environmental policies and take appropriate steps to ensure compliance.

Fully recognize hazards associated with a barge unloading operation and ensure all personnel adhere to safe operating rules and policies.

Operate the uncovering/covering unit safely and productively in all conditions, including high/low river conditions and inclement weather.

Position barges as they arrive in the slip and place barge haul cables on the bow and stern keel.

Recognize first‑look characteristics such as out‑of‑condition product, previously discharged product or mixed grain, and communicate condition to the control room operator.

Recognize excessive emissions from the barge Unloader or ship loading spouts and notify control room supervisors.

Additional Responsibilities

Operate grain driers as necessary.

Attend safety meetings and training sessions as directed by the General Superintendent and SHE manager.

Understand duties and responsibilities in the event of an emergency evacuation or man‑overboard emergency.

Utilize good, clear, calm and concise communications.

Respect co‑workers, management, contractors and visitors.

Perform miscellaneous duties, functions and responsibilities as assigned by LDC management.

Perform assigned jobs that may include maintenance and unskilled labor as deemed necessary by management.

Mentor, train and occasionally direct members of the immediate crew, exercising cautions and preventative measures relating to SHE conditions.

Experience & Qualifications Education / Professional Certifications / Licenses

High School Diploma / GED

Valid Driver’s License

Ability to obtain TWIC card

Experience

1 to 2 years in a marine terminal barge unloading operation required.

1 to 2 years actual unloading experience preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledgeable and experienced in the use of industrial barge unloading equipment, skid steer tractors, overhead hoists with spreader bars, varying types of barge covers, and hand tools normally associated with a barge unloading operation.

Can climb stairs, ladders and walk extended distances up inclines.

Can work from ladders and platforms at heights above 6’.

Can lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Can work in dusty conditions.

Can work frequently in inclement weather.

Is aware and attentive to surroundings which may include automatically starting conveyor belts, other moving machinery, overhead loads and vessel gangways on the dock.

Ensures environmental equipment for the unloading operation is functioning properly at all times.

Additional Information Equipment Used

Use of proper personal protective equipment, including fall protection, required at all times as well as personnel protective equipment normally associated with a marine operation.

Working Conditions

Requires frequent extensions of regular working hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, often with little or short notice.

Requires walking/working outdoors, alternating between climate‑controlled areas and areas with varying temperatures and in various weather conditions.

Employee Supervision Functional lead man responsibilities for the riverside barge unloading crewmembers.
