Job Description
HDD Operator (Richlands) EG3990 role at ITG Communications, LLC. The HDD Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground fiber, conduit, and related infrastructure for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and other telecommunications projects. This position requires skill in operating Vermeer and Ditch Witch drills, attention to detail when working around existing utilities, and a commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork.
Responsibilities
Safely operate horizontal directional drills (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar) for underground fiber installation.
Read and interpret utility locates and construction drawings to determine drill path and prevent utility conflicts.
Trench, place duct, pull cable, and direct bury mainline and drop conduit as required.
Coordinate with locator, vacuum excavator, and support crew to ensure drill path accuracy and safety.
Restore job sites to original or better conditions upon completion of work.
Maintain accurate records of bore lengths, depths, materials, and production.
Perform basic maintenance and inspection of HDD equipment; report repair needs promptly.
Lead by example by promoting teamwork, safety, and professionalism on the job site.
Communicate effectively using hand or audio signals with ground personnel.
Ensure compliance with all safety procedures, PPE use, and company policies.

Daily production targets met or exceeded
Equipment maintained in safe operating condition
Compliance with utility locate and restoration standards
Requirements Education
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience
Minimum 3 years’ experience operating HDD equipment in underground construction or telecom.
Proven ability to work safely and efficiently under limited supervision.
Knowledge of utility locating, potholing, and daylighting procedures.
CDL-A license with tanker endorsement preferred.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
Strong communication skills, teamwork, and a positive attitude.
Exposure
Daily interaction with construction supervisors, locators, and field crews.
Coordination with project management, safety, and logistics teams.
Regular contact with customers, residents, and the public in active work zones.
Exposure to varying weather conditions, jobsite noise, and traffic environments.
