Park Maintenance Worker I - Temporary/Part-Time City of La Mesa Department of Public Works invites applications for the part‑time position of Park Maintenance Worker I.

Position Summary This temporary, non‑benefited position is limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Selected candidates may work up to 2,000 hours between January 2026 and December 2026, as long as the 1,000‑hour limit per fiscal year is not exceeded. The typical schedule is 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (9/80) with alternate Fridays off. Two part‑time openings exist: one in the Park Maintenance unit and one in the Streetscapes unit; this posting is for the Park Maintenance unit.

Key Responsibilities

Perform a variety of semi‑skilled and skilled grounds, gardening, and turf maintenance duties in landscaped areas, parks, playgrounds, and public facilities.

Do routine maintenance such as mowing, edging, weed‑eating, leaf blowing, shrub trimming, raking, and graffiti removal.

Maintain irrigation systems: adjust timers, repair sprinkler heads and lines, locate and fix water breaks, and refer problems to higher‑level staff.

Plant, water, and maintain landscaped areas (turf, bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs); trim, prune, fertilize, and weed lawns.

Identify turf, shrub, and tree diseases and parasites.

Repair equipment, including playground and picnic facilities, gates, fences, and tree stakes.

Assist in moving and installing park equipment such as bleachers and playground structures.

Conduct routine facility maintenance, clean restrooms, stock supplies, and perform minor carpentry, painting, and plumbing repairs.

General grounds cleaning and trash removal.

Respond to public inquiries courteously and resolve complaints efficiently.

Operate landscaping equipment (sprayers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, weed eaters) and hand or small power tools (push and riding mowers, shovels, rakes, chainsaws).

Maintain records of time and maintenance activities.

Apply grounds maintenance chemicals, store and mix herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides, ensuring safe application and equipment operation.

Drive vehicles to transport materials, tools, and equipment.

Assist and train less experienced personnel.

Perform additional duties such as street, sewer, or public‑works maintenance, concrete preparation, and other related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical qualifications include:

Formal or informal education ensuring reading and writing at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Six months of experience performing grounds maintenance work.

Valid driver’s license.

Ability to lift up to 50 lb and proficiency with weed‑whip, hedge trimmer, blower, and safe operation around traffic.

Special Requirements Position requires mandatory drug and alcohol testing and a post‑offer medical evaluation, including a Livescan background check. Applicants must authorize the City to contact previous employers regarding drug testing history.
