Street Maintenance Worker – Rapid Responder Nights
Position within City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department.
About This Position The Street Maintenance Division maintains the City’s roadways and right‑of‑way assets. Employees handle asphalt/pothole repair, debris removal, street resurfacing, street sweeping, right‑of‑way landscaping, ADA response, grading/dustproofing alleys, and storm‑related issues such as flooded streets, clogged storm drains, and wash maintenance.
Shift & Hours Night shift Monday–Friday 6:00 PM – 2:30 AM. Stand‑by 2:30 AM – 6:00 AM. $1.50 shift differential.
Responsibilities
Operate dump trucks, small vehicles, and power equipment for street and storm sewer maintenance.
Perform manual labor tasks related to asphalt, concrete, drainage, and right‑of‑way maintenance.
Respond to ADA issues, grading/dustproofing alleys, and storm‑related issues.
Ideal Candidate
Knowledge of Blue Stake laws and markings; City Traffic Barricade Manual; asphalt repair procedures, equipment, and tools.
Understanding of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.
Qualifications
One year of experience in manual labor, small vehicle and power equipment operation for street and storm sewer maintenance (Street Maintenance Worker I level).
Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement at time of hire or completion of the City of Phoenix Street Maintenance Worker apprenticeship program.
Medical clearance from Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) issued by a City of Phoenix occupational medical provider.
Pre‑employment drug testing; subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing.
Criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for use of personal or city vehicles on city business.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum one year of experience directing or leading teams on assigned projects.
Experience with repairing asphalt and operating asphalt rollers and paving equipment.
Experience with hand or power tools, setting up traffic barricades, lane cones, warning signs, and operating a 4‑yard dump truck or larger.
Working Conditions
Moving objects up to 50 lbs; bending, crouching, or stooping repeatedly.
Outdoor environment with heavy vehicle, pedestrian, or Light Rail traffic.
Irregular hours, second and third shifts, weekends, holidays, evenings or nights.
Standing in one location and walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
Heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust for extended periods.
