Holyoke Community College invites adjunct applications to teach an in‑person section of POL 120, State and Local Government. This course provides an introduction to the structure, function, and politics of United States government at the state, county, and municipal levels, emphasizing their roles within the federal system. The class meets on the HCC campus Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 am – 12:15 pm.
Adjunct faculty provide a quality learning experience for Holyoke Community College students on a semester basis. The adjunct faculty member reports to a dean and performs instruction‑related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner in accordance with the mission, policies, and procedures of the college. The relationship of the adjunct faculty member to the student is one of teacher and facilitator of learning. Responsibilities include:
Distributing and reviewing the course syllabus during the first class meeting, and forwarding the dean a course syllabus no later than the end of the first week of classes in each session.
Utilizing active‑learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies to assist learners in meeting course objectives, such as cooperative learning, experiential learning, writing for learning, and critical‑thinking initiatives.
Remaining abreast of ongoing developments and practices in the professional content area(s).
Arranging for acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment in a timely manner in collaboration with the area dean.
Being prompt and accurate in recording and reporting student data, including assessment of student performance and final grade reports.
Supporting students’ learning goals by focusing on learning outcomes, taking into account student needs and abilities, familiarizing with academic and social support, accommodating individual differences, maintaining academic integrity, and being available to assist students.
Recommending campus services to students as needed, including library services, financial aid, counseling, supplemental instruction, etc.
Attending all scheduled classes and, if absent, notifying the supervisor and providing an alternate assignment.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Political Science or a related field.
Firm grounding in the subject matter of the course being offered.
Experience using an online learning management system to support classroom instruction (Canvas preferred).
Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
