Job Description
Academic advisors serve a caseload of assigned majors to provide guidance toward degree completion. With support from Department Chairs and the Dean, advisors will display a thorough understanding of curriculum procedures and graduation requirements, advocate for students, and work closely with faculty, student success officers, and academic records to improve student outcomes and success at UTM. Advisors are expected to monitor students' progress and provide resources and appropriate academic interventions as needed in support of UT Martin's student retention and success goals. Advisors are responsible for accurate record keeping, proficiency in all software and systems used in advising and registration, and participation in retention strategies and campaigns for their assigned caseloads.
Responsibilities
Provide specialized major-specific guidance, advocacy, and academic advising to students in an assigned caseload to improve retention and graduation outcomes for students, including course selection, registration, program requirements, and academic policies.
Guide students in developing academic plans aligned with their educational and career goals.
Assist students in understanding and navigating university procedures, such as course withdrawals, course repeat policies, probations, and appeals.
Maintain a thorough working knowledge of all curricular elements of assigned areas and serve on any associated committees or work groups as required.
Monitor and analyze student progress and engage in campaigns and research to guide students toward appropriate academic interventions.
Utilize proactive and appreciative advising practices to assist students and identify and mitigate potential barriers to success.
Develop and implement strategies to support retention, persistence, and graduation goals in alignment with college and university initiatives.
Maintain regular communication with faculty and staff to coordinate support for students facing academic or personal challenges.
Identify at-risk students using performance data and proactively conduct outreach to provide guidance, intervention, and referrals to campus resources.
Develop and deliver workshops, presentations, and information sessions on academic success, study skills, and degree planning.
Support new student orientation, recruitment events, and other programs to promote student engagement and success.
Serve as a knowledgeable resource for students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding advising services.
Maintain accurate and confidential student advising records in compliance with FERPA and institutional policies.
Prepare reports and summaries for the Dean on advising activities, student progress, and retention data.
Ensure student information systems are up-to-date and accurate.
Participate in college committees, advising councils, or task forces as assigned by the Dean.
Engage in ongoing training to stay current with best practices in academic advising and retention strategies.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support student success.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree preferred.
Working knowledge of the basic principles of academic advising and the capacity to learn all facets of specific degree programs.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to analyze problems and formulate solutions.
Ability to provide excellent customer service.
Ability to work constructively on a team and complete work independently.
Ability to learn and understand new systems.
