Job Summary
The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university—including police, security, and emergency management—operating 24/7/365. DPSS combines operations at Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint to provide a safe and secure environment for students, visitors, faculty, and staff. Through partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement, DPSS delivers a blended service model that meets community needs and exceeds expectations.
Responsibilities
Receive and prioritize calls, determining appropriate action for emergency and non-emergency assistance.
Communicate with upset or irate citizens to elicit useful information.
Dispatch public safety and security personnel to all university-owned and leased facilities.
Coordinate first responder information through the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system and various communication devices.
Monitor complex public safety radio frequencies, building alarms, and security systems.
Maintain liaison with police, fire, and other emergency agencies to assure the safety of the university community.
Participate in social media platforms to support safety‑related operations.
Handle confidential information with discretion.
Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED with two (2) years of relevant experience; or
Associate’s degree with one (1) year of relevant experience.
Demonstrated compassion and calmness while eliciting information and adopting appropriate action plans for emergencies.
Excellent visual, auditory, and mental acuity and stamina.
Advanced typing skills for data entry.
Successful completion of a comprehensive public safety background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.
Adherence to DPSS uniformed personnel dress code, maintaining appearance and grooming standards.
