Job Summary To assist physicians and other primary health care providers with clerical, financial and other general medical office operations in ambulatory practice. To work in support of clinic operations performing medical office, billing and clinical duties as may be required in a specific clinic.

Education & Experience High School Diploma/GED required and completion of a formal medical office assistant or equivalent training program (e.g., Certified Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse). Alternatively, two (2) years of experience in a healthcare setting is acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of general medical office procedures

Good telephone skills

Excellent customer service skills

Must be able to multi‑task

Typing speed 35 words per minute

Proficiency with Microsoft Word

Interpersonal skills to interact with patients and staff

Verbal and written communication skills

General understanding of basic accounting principles

Responsibilities

Answer telephones, greet patients, pull, update, and file patient medical records

Verify patient demographic and insurance information, schedule appointments, and perform billing and bookkeeping

Assist with patient histories, verify accuracy of patient information, prepare charts, and provide chaperone assistance during examinations

Educate and advise patients on specified medical issues within established guidelines

Assist with scheduling, coding, and billing of medical procedures

Arrange examining room equipment; clean rooms and escort patients to and from assigned rooms

Dispose contaminated supplies, maintain stocks of medical supplies and medications

Practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods; adhere to HIPAA, OSHA, infection control, and medical records compliance regulations

Understand that duties are general and may be modified by management

Physical and Environmental Demands Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, exposure to biohazardous conditions (radiation, blood‑borne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, or toxic/caustic chemicals). May involve working hours beyond scheduled hours, occasional ergonomic activities (bending, lifting up to 75 pounds, climbing, crouching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, constant reaching, sitting, standing, twisting, walking).
