Summary The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System Mental Health Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Senior Social Worker - HUD VASH. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards—as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. You must be an excellent communicator and team player who is adaptable to the needs of a growing medical center.

Pay Range

Base pay range: $99,099.00/yr – $128,834.00/yr

Qualifications

United States Citizenship: Must be US Citizen.

Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).

Education: Master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school is fully accredited. A doctoral degree may not substitute for the master’s degree.

Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS‑0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid/.

Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, the following qualifications criteria must be met for appropriate grade assignment.

GS‑12 Senior Social Worker candidates must have at least two (2) years of experience post‑advanced practice licensure and at least one (1) year must be equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level.

Senior social workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment.

Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice and may have certification or other post‑masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization.

Licensure/Certification: Senior social workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, unless grandfathered by the state. Advanced license must be submitted with application.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics: Applicants must demonstrate competencies necessary to perform the work of the position (e.g., specialized interventions, advanced case management, differential diagnosis, outcome evaluation, consulting, policy development).

Physical Requirements: Use of fingers, moderate walking and standing, vision requirements, hearing aid permissible, clear speech, emotional stability, moderate duty, valid driver’s license, pass Occupational Health screening, ability to climb stairs, walk short distances, lift 25 pounds.

Duties

Responsible for program oversight, monitoring, and administration; primary contact with local Public Housing Authorities and case management services to coordinate Veteran care with VA Medical Center and community providers.

Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies; work closely with VA medical center’s homeless programs, residential and community care programs, and domiciliary programs to ensure continuity of services.

Provide advanced practice clinical psychosocial and case management services to eligible veterans and their families in the VA Supporting Housing (VASH) Program.

Support Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV)/Community Care Programs through outreach, task forces, and special assignments.

Assist local Medical Center with special projects and committees.

Mentor social work interns and newly hired social workers.

Travel to patient homes and outreach sites via government vehicle; valid driver’s license required.

Benefits & Compensation

Travel: Expected to travel up to 75% of the time.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment—eligible employees with family income below $144,000 may receive up to 25% of eligible childcare costs up to $416.66 per month.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contributions.

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care (many programs extend into retirement).

Paid Time Off: 37–50 days annual paid time off per year (13–26 days leave, 13 days sick, 11 federal holidays).
