Transit Fleet Technician Pay Range: $33.81 - $45.65. Offers will be negotiated based on each candidate's qualifications.

General Purpose Performs semi‑skilled, skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the division.

Supervision Received Works under the general supervision of the Transit Maintenance Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised Responsible for communication with operators regarding proper operation of vehicles/equipment and shop tools and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well‑being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times.

Carries out preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.

Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and hand, electric, and air‑driven tools.

Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment.

Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.

Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies, hybrid drive units and related systems on gas, hybrid and diesel vehicles.

Cuts and welds metal and performs limited body repair, touch‑up, painting and related work.

Changes and repairs tires and tubes.

Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs.

Provides Fleet Maintenance Supervisor with explanations of failures and needed repairs or services.

Conducts analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine cost‑effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement and develops shop procedures and budget data.

Purchases equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.

Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.

Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment.

Assists in the preparation and administration of mechanical budgets in conformance with adopted policies and procedures.

Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.

Transit shop operations are open 7 days per week; may be required to work weekends as part of normal scheduling.

Peripheral Duties May serve as a member of various employee committees.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent plus specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field; 3 years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: considerable knowledge of gas, hybrid and diesel engines, transmissions, electronics, hydraulics, air systems, hydraulic pumps and valves, wheelchair lifts, air‑conditioning, generators, and welding; price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; working knowledge of municipal repair hazards and safety precautions; working knowledge of modern equipment maintenance practices and tools.

Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.

Ability to follow preventive maintenance programs, maintain accounting procedures, complete projects independently, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.

Special Requirements: Valid State Driver's license with CDL endorsement, or ability to obtain one.

Tools and Equipment Used

Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing, personal protection devices, power and hand tools, hydraulic lifts, air tools, mechanic's tools, electronic diagnostic equipment, personal computer, calculator, phone, mobile or portable radio.

The employee may be required to walk, sit, talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lift weights in excess of 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. Most work is performed inside the shop area, but the employee may be required to work outside in extreme weather conditions, temperature ranges and/or at night. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is moderately noisy.
