2nd Shift Maintenance Technician American Excelsior Company

An American Excelsior Mechanical Technician working 2nd shift works 4 pm – 2:30 am Monday – Thursday and typically 2-10:30 on Fridays. This person is responsible for multiple areas and types of equipment in the plant. Our plant produces wood excelsior and excelsior blankets, pads, bales, and logs on custom machinery. This job requires a strong mechanical knowledge of multiple types of equipment. Primary responsibilities include performing skilled preventative, corrective and predictive maintenance associated with the upkeep of the equipment and submitting or recommending modifications to PM programs and design changes to improve equipment reliability.
Pay rate increases from $24.01/hr probationary rate to $28.09+/hr after successful completion of the 30-day probationary period.
Key Responsibilities
Performs preventative, corrective and predictive maintenance associated with the upkeep of the equipment.
Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment.
Working knowledge of troubleshooting.
Dismantles defective machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts.
Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.
Examines parts to detect imperfections and replaces as needed.
Repairs or replaces defective parts.
Starts devices to test their performance.
Maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment.
Repairs and maintains the physical structure of establishment.
Knowledge of basic machine tools such as grinders, drills, saws.
Minimal machining capabilities.
Some exposure to operation of cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
Performs semi-skilled preventive maintenance on equipment to insure proper operation and longevity of parts.
Builds guards as needed on production equipment to OSHA standards.
Connects wire to motors, fixtures, and other electrical equipment, replaces switches and fuses, and splices wire and insulates wire with friction tape. Installs and repairs electrical apparatus, such as transformers and wiring, and electrical and electronic components of machinery and equipment under the direction of Electrical Technician.
Shows the initiative to react to mechanical problems aggressively.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Working knowledge of use of micrometers and calipers.
Working knowledge of blueprint and schematic reading skills.
Average welding, brazing and fabricating skills.
Average mechanical troubleshooting skills.
Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Average mathematical skills of addition, subtraction and multiplication as required.
Requires little supervision for complex troubleshooting, mechanical problems, and corrective actions once trained.
Ability to build machinery and equipment from blueprints provided (Preferred)
Working knowledge of machining skills on lathes, drill presses and milling machines (Preferred)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing any of these jobs, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, clench, grip, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. This job requires repetitive hand, arm, and wrist movements. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Steel/composite toe boots/shoes and safety glasses are required in all areas of the plant. A bump cap, and hearing protection are required in certain work areas. The working conditions are noisy and dusty; associates are regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.
CANDIDATE MUST SUCCESSFULLY PASS PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL, JOB FUNCTIONALITY TEST, and DRUG AND ALCOHOL TEST.
