Assistant Director, Facilities Maintenance and Energy

Black Hills State University invites qualified, self‑motivated candidates to apply for the position within the Facilities Services Department. POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of Facilities Maintenance and Energy provides leadership and oversight for campus building systems, maintenance operations, utility management, and energy efficiency efforts. This position supports the Associate Vice President for Facilities Services in maintaining safe, reliable, and well‑functioning facilities across the university. The Assistant Director manages maintenance staff, oversees building system operations, supports construction and renovation projects, and guides energy and utility planning for the campus. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee daily maintenance operations for campus buildings including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, and related equipment. Supervise maintenance and mail services staff; provide coaching, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations to support employee development and departmental needs. Manage utility and energy functions including budgeting, tracking, and analysis of consumption; use EnergyCap software to monitor usage and identify cost‑saving opportunities. Recommend and implement strategies to improve energy efficiency and conservation across campus. Assist with construction and renovation projects; support development of project scopes, estimates, schedules, and coordination with architects, engineers, contractors, and campus stakeholders. Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs to ensure reliability and longevity of building systems. Monitor and manage maintenance and repair projects, both short‑term and long‑term, to support campus operational needs. Provide oversight for mail services and central receiving to ensure timely, accurate processing and distribution of shipments and mail. Support the planning and management of departmental budgets; ensure proper accounting and coordination of project funding. Maintain communication with students, faculty, staff, and external partners regarding maintenance needs, comfort levels, and energy use. Respond to building system issues and mechanical problems; guide troubleshooting and repair in line with established practices. Promote a safe working environment by following safety practices and ensuring compliance with campus policies and regulations. QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, business administration or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five years of related experience in facilities maintenance, building systems, or construction management. Knowledge of maintenance and repair programs, preventive maintenance, and building systems including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical. Experience supervising staff and managing budgets. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a university or similar environment. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.

Preferred

Experience in higher education or government facilities management. Experience managing facilities across multiple buildings, including residential facilities. Familiarity with energy management systems and utility budgeting. Professional certifications such as PMP, Certified Facility Manager, or other relevant credentials.

COMMENTS

This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Services. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, with occasional irregular hours, travel, or weekend work as needed. Sponsorship is not available for this position. TO APPLY
