Maintenance Technician, Level 1, Groundskeeper
We need a maintenance technician to maintain the condition and appearance of campus grounds, lawns, gardens, sidewalks, roadways, bio‑swales, and athletic fields. Responsibilities include keeping grounds clear of trash, trimming and pruning trees and shrubs, removing leaves, maintaining equipment, and assisting with snow and ice removal.
Duties
Minor mowing and edging sidewalks and curbs
Prune trees and shrubs
Mulch gardens and tree rings
Remove weeds and unwanted debris in gardens and landscaped areas
Remove leaves
Gather and remove trash around campus
Operate a variety of landscaping equipment: mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaw, bed edger
Operate larger equipment: trucks, dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, mini excavator, Kubota UTV, Bobcat Toolcat machine
Minor maintenance and repairs on grounds equipment
Operate and maintain irrigation system on soccer field
Remove snow from all sidewalks, stairs, parking lots, roadways; apply salt when required
Maintain outdoor athletic facilities with help from the athletic department
Assist with special events and other duties as assigned
Remain available for additional assignments during inclement weather or periods of inactivity
Education and Experience
High school diploma with specialized training in landscaping and 3–5 years of experience in maintaining grounds and outdoor facilities
Advanced training in landscaping or horticulture preferred
Knowledge of trees, shrubs, flowers, and planting and growing techniques suitable for this area
Experience operating and servicing lawn and landscaping equipment, irrigation, basic plumbing and electrical; knowledge and skills highly desirable
Ability to read, write, and follow instructions; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures
Skills and Abilities
Read, understand, and follow policies, procedures, and blueprints, diagrams, sketches
Safely and effectively operate tools and equipment used in maintenance of buildings and grounds
Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; establish and maintain working relationships
Apply safety codes and regulations
Keep simple records and reports; work from oral and written directions
Lift 50 lbs without assistance; lift heavy items with assistance; perform strenuous manual work for long periods in hot and cold weather
Work independently when detailed instructions are absent; work under direct supervision when required
Additional Requirements
Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required
Possess or willing to acquire valid licenses and permits for application of lawn and garden herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizer
Working Environment Travel on and around campus grounds. Heavy lifting, exposure to chemicals—including herbicides and pesticides—and exposure to bugs, insects, animals, and poisonous plants. Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, wind). Certain tasks may require wearing protective equipment for long periods (helmet, safety glasses, mask, respirator, gloves). Personal and public safety rules are expected to be followed at all times. This position is considered essential.
