Position Overview The UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Area Low Desert Weed Management Advisor at the Assistant rank will implement an innovative multi‑county extension education and applied research program focused on the biology, ecology, and management of weeds of agricultural importance in the lower desert cropping systems of Imperial and Riverside Counties.

Location Headquarters This position will be headquartered in the UC Cooperative Extension Office in Imperial County, 1050 E. Holton Road, Holtville, CA 92250.

Position Details The Advisor will develop applied weed management research locally and in partnerships with collaborators. Responsibilities include advancing research on weed biology, ecology, and management practices; designing and implementing educational programs; and disseminating findings through workshops, demonstrations, publications, and digital media. Work will involve collaboration with UC ANR academics, statewide extension teams, USDA ARS scientists, community groups, and county agencies in Imperial and Riverside Counties.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and conduct applied weed management research in the Imperial and Riverside low desert agro‑systems.

Create and deliver extension education programs, including farm consultations, workshops, short courses, and field demonstrations.

Produce research outputs such as peer‑reviewed articles, newsletters, and technical reports.

Collaborate with local growers, industry, and community stakeholders to address weed‑related challenges.

Represent UC ANR at conferences, partner meetings, and advisory panels.

Assist in the development of county and statewide policy briefs and educational materials.

Counties of Responsibility Imperial and Riverside Counties.

Reporting Relationship The Advisor reports directly to the UC Cooperative Extension Director for Imperial and San Diego Counties, with input from the Director for Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. The position is on‑site; the Advisor must maintain office hours and field presence in both counties.

Qualifications and Skills Required Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in weed science, agronomy, botany, or a related field.

Knowledge and experience in crop production and weed management.

Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License (QAL) within one year of appointment or prior use of the certificate.

Capacity to conduct team‑based research and education consistent with UC ANR values.

Proof of academic title eligibility per UC policies (research, extension, and teaching experience).

Ability to travel flexibly and hold a valid California driver’s license with vehicle liability insurance.

Legal authorization to work in the U.S. (no visa sponsorship).

Non‑remote position.

The Advisor will serve both counties, engaging with local growers, agribusinesses, and community groups to address weed management challenges.

Salary & Benefits Salary ranges from $85,600 (Step I) to $108,600 (Step VI) for Assistant Rank. Benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, two paid vacation days per month, one sick day per month, paid holidays, and eligibility for sabbatical leave based on UC policy.
