Nature of Work This position is responsible for providing emergency and non-emergency dispatch services for the City of Ellsworth.

An employee in this role serves as a dispatcher for the Police, Fire, and Public Works Departments. The work involves receiving and making phone calls, monitoring alarms, and operating radio communications. The position requires proficiency with computers and the use of CAD systems. Because many calls are emergency-related, they must be handled with calmness, accuracy, and efficiency.

Employee also greet visitors to the department and attempts to resolve their questions or directs the citizen to the appropriate department. Employee also assists in the typing and maintenance of department records and reports. Work is reviewed by the Police Chief, or officer in charge, through direct observations, reports and discussions. Work is of a confidential nature.

Examples of Work (Illustrative Only)

Answers all incoming telephone and radio calls, providing the necessary information or dispatching the appropriate staff to a location if necessary.

Dispatches fire, ambulance and rescue calls.

Maintains a daily log of all calls and radio transmissions.

Handles incoming calls for various public safety agencies.

Receives all visitors to the Police Department and provides them with assistance or directs them to the appropriate staff member.

Monitors residential, business and bank alarm systems.

Maintains files on complaints received, teletype messages and other files related to the department operations.

Retrieves information from the filing system for officer in the field, examples include licensing information, outstanding warrants or other necessary data.

Assists the officer in the typing and preparation of police reports, including providing the officer with all necessary information.

Dispatches mutual aid situations throughout the county.

Performs related work as required.

Requirements of Work

Ability to handle many responsible and varied tasks at the same time.

Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Ability to employ good judgment in making decisions in the light of established precedents.

Ability to compose routine letters and memos.

Ability to effectively deal with the public either on the phone or in person in occasionally serious conditions.

Knowledge of and ability to operate a public safety radio system.

Ability to work 12 hours shifts.

Ability to work overtime.

Work is of a confidential nature.

Employees must pass an extensive background and polygraph examination.

Desirable Experience and Training

Graduation from an accredited high school and some experience in a public safety agency; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special training and certification at Maine Criminal Justice Academy for dispatching.
