Offer Description The University of Granada (UGR, Spain) invites applications for a

fully funded 3.5-year PhD position

within the international research project “Boosting AI-driven multimodal decoding of Speech and Language from Brain Signals (brAIn2lang)”.

Neurological injuries and neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can severely impair speech and communication. The brAIn2lang project aims to address this challenge by developing neural speech prostheses capable of decoding intended speech directly from brain activity, enabling more natural and efficient communication through brain–computer interfaces (BCIs).

The project combines artificial intelligence, speech and language technologies, and neuroscience, using both non-invasive (EEG) and invasive (sEEG) brain recordings. A core objective is to develop self-supervised and deep learning models that can generalize across participants and recording modalities, while ensuring transparency and trust through explainable AI techniques.

Main Research Tasks

The PhD candidate will focus on:

Development of explainable and interpretable AI models for brain-to-text and brain-to-speech decoding

Design of interpretability tools and evaluation protocols for neural decoding systems

Integration of neural, semantic, and linguistic embeddings into large language models (LLMs) and text-to-speech (TTS) systems

Contribution to model generalization and interpretability-driven assessment

The candidate will work in close collaboration with a complementary PhD researcher (SP2-PhD2) specializing in language neuroscience and multimodal neuroimaging (EEG, EEG–fMRI, sEEG), enabling strong integration between experimental neuroscience and interpretable AI models.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should have a strong background in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related quantitative disciplines, with solid skills in deep learning, machine learning, mathematics, and statistics. Experience with Python and modern ML frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow) is required. An interest in explainable AI, neuroscience, brain–computer interfaces, or neural data analysis is essential. Prior experience with EEG/sEEG or speech technologies is advantageous but not mandatory.

Research Environment

The University of Granada is a leading European research institution and is ranked 101st worldwide and 1st in Spain in Computer Science. CITIC-UGR is a multidisciplinary research center with over 250 researchers in AI, data science, and signal processing, offering excellent infrastructure and international collaborations. CIMCYC is a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence and an internationally recognized center in cognitive neuroscience.
