WordPress Block Developer/Designer (Gutenberg + WCAG 2.1)
Overview
We’re hiring a WordPress Developer/Designer who builds block‑based (Gutenberg) websites only – no Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, or other heavy page builders. You’ll create custom block themes, design clean layouts, and deliver WCAG 2.1‑compliant sites with strong attention to UI details and basic graphic design.
Responsibilities
Build WordPress sites using Gutenberg + block themes (Full Site Editing where appropriate).
Create and maintain custom block themes (templates, template parts, theme.json, global styles).
Develop reusable components using:
Core blocks
Block patterns
Style variations
Custom blocks (native blocks and/or ACF blocks) when needed.
Design page layouts, typography systems, spacing rules, and component libraries that editors can use confidently.
Ensure sites meet WCAG 2.1 accessibility requirements (keyboard, focus, contrast, semantic structure, forms, navigation).
Optimize performance (lean front‑end, minimal plugin footprint, image optimization, clean markup).
Collaborate on IA/UX and translate wireframes into editor‑friendly block structures.
Provide basic graphic/UI support (icons, simple assets, visual polish).
Requirements
Proven experience building block‑based WordPress sites (Gutenberg/FSE).
Strong skills in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WordPress theme development.
Solid knowledge of block theme architecture (theme.json, templates, template parts, patterns, global styles).
Demonstrated ability to implement and QA WCAG 2.1 accessibility.
Strong visual judgment: layout, spacing, typography, and basic graphic design capability.
Comfortable working with Git and modern dev workflows.
Non‑Negotiables
Block editor only.
No Elementor/Divi/WPBakery (or similar page builders).
Prioritize performance and maintainability (avoid plugin bloat).
Nice to Have
Custom block development (native block tooling) and/or ACF blocks.
Experience building pattern libraries and editor style guides for clients.
Familiarity with accessibility testing tools (axe, Lighthouse, WAVE) and screen reader spot checks.
WooCommerce experience (if relevant).
What to Send
Portfolio links (highlight block/FSE projects).
1–2 examples where you designed/built for accessibility (WCAG 2.1).
Quick note on how you approach block themes (patterns vs custom blocks, plugin philosophy, performance).
