Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia University invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist position in theoretical condensed matter and materials physics, with an emphasis on the development of computational and analytical methods for strongly correlated electron systems. This position is part of a research program dedicated to advancing the Variational Discrete Action Theory (VDAT) – a novel variational approach to the quantum many‑body problem.

Responsibilities Candidates will conduct theoretical and computational research on strongly correlated electron systems, focusing on variational and discrete‑action methods. Responsibilities include developing new computational techniques, writing code, mentoring students, collaborating with a team, and communicating results orally and in writing.

Qualifications • Candidates must have a PhD in physics, materials science, applied mathematics, chemistry, or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant post‑PhD experience.

Strong background in theoretical or computational condensed matter/mat materials physics (or related field).

Experience with computational many‑body physics, such as dynamical mean‑field theory, quantum Monte‑Carlo approaches, diagonalization methods, etc.

Programming experience and strong communication skills (oral and written).

Ability to mentor students in a team environment.

Position is initially for six months, possibly extending to four years. The position is available immediately and will remain open until it is filled.

Equal Opportunity Statement Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran.

Pay Transparency Disclosure The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
