Salary Information Compensation is based on a multi‑step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential for the assigned pay grade. A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board rules and regulations.

Nature of Work The fundamental purpose of this position is to provide protection and security for the citizens of Montgomery. Employees who are not Alabama Peace Officer Standards (APOST) certified are appointed provisionally as Police Officer Trainees. Upon completion of the Police Academy, trainees are appointed to Police Officer status and serve a 12‑month probation period before becoming permanent employees. Police officers serve as entry‑level sworn personnel in one of the Montgomery Police Department divisions. Duties include daily patrol, traffic enforcement, investigations, communication, emergency incident response, narcotics undercover operations, crime‑scene security, and documentation of events in writing for court testimony. Officers are typically supervised by Sergeants and must follow the chain of command. Early Hires perform clerical and runner duties while maintaining fitness required for the Academy. Early Hires do not perform law‑enforcement duties but automatically transition to Police Officer Trainee status on the first day of their scheduled Police Academy.

Minimum Qualifications

Physical Requirements: Applicant must be certified by a licensed physician as in good health and able to meet the Police Department’s Physical Fitness standards, including completion of the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission Physical Ability/Agility Test.

Age Requirements: Applicant must be 19 years of age and eligible for certification by the Alabama Peace Officer’s Standards and Training (APOST) Commission.

Educational Requirements: Graduation from an approved high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate is required. The application must meet APOST Commission standards and correspond to the Alabama State Department of Education rules. Correspondence or mail‑order high school diplomas or certificates are not acceptable.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a valid Alabama driver’s license prior to employment.

Assignment may require first, second, or third shift duty, including weekends and holidays.
