Position Summary PhD position is available starting Spring 2025 in the plant virology laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, The University of Georgia‑Tifton. The position is based in Coastal Plain Experiment Station at Tifton GA, and all research objectives and coursework will be carried out from UGA‑Tifton Campus. The successful applicant will contribute to a project involving insect‑transmitted virus, characterization, and epidemiology of crops grown in the region—including vegetables, peanuts, and tobacco—studying various components of the pathosystem with emphasis on virus‑vector and virus‑host interactions in crops important to Georgia. The role will also apply genomics approaches for host resistance against viruses in cotton crops and disseminate research outcomes through conferences, symposia, and peer‑reviewed research articles.
Responsibilities
Work in laboratory, greenhouse, and field to study the molecular epidemiology of insect‑transmitted viruses in GA.
Develop research design, diagnostic tools, data analysis, interpretation, project management, results summarization, and formal presentations in meetings and symposiums.
Continue graduate student course credits (20%).
Write reports and present data in symposiums (10%).
Qualifications Relevant/Preferred Education & Experience:
Recent graduate with a major in molecular biology, plant science, plant biology, plant virology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or an allied subject, with a GPA of 3.5 and above.
Experience in plant virology labs and exposure to field, greenhouse, and molecular labs.
Higher GRE score and a satisfactory TOEFL score are required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:
Prior experience and exposure to molecular techniques and field analysis are preferred.
Physical Demands Light lifting, standing, and/or sitting for extended periods of time.
