SALARY: $45,036 to $63,049 Annually
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Horticulturists take the lead role of maintaining existing landscapes, planning, and installing new plant materials and designs, pest management, and propagation. Horticulturists are required to educate the public about the Botanic Gardens and horticulture practices through tours, field trips, and public speaking. Responsible for overall horticulture pertaining to, but not limited by their primary sites.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead operational and maintenance tasks for the Children’s Village interior and exterior plantscapes, hardscapes and waterscapes as needed. Perform duties as lead staff at the Children’s Village when needed.
Create, coordinate, and implement viable educational programming for all ages. Utilize outside groups and organizations when applicable in such programming. Work with the local and regional schools and be willing to gain a solid understanding of their relatable curriculum.
Apply horticultural concepts with volunteers and varied clients that result in serving the needs of the garden plantings and displays as well as the growing of food crops to be distributed.
Creatively, work to interpret all aspects of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens collection and other areas of public interest with the available funding.
Stay abreast of trends and innovations in the field of environmental education, horticulture, volunteer management, youth issues, horticultural therapy, botanic garden management, youth and educational issues, school curriculums and community gardening.
Assist in public communication and interpretation about the natural world and sustainability. This includes participation in lectures, tours, radio, television, electronic media, and other methods of public relations. It also includes the development of interpretive signage, educational environments, and other educational endeavors. Assist public with diverse questions about the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens and horticulture.
Maintain a safe environment and assist in promoting safety in all aspects of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens.
Assist staff with the overall goals and objectives, policies, and priorities of the Botanic Gardens.
With the assistance of CBG horticulturist staff, maintain plant production for the annual and perennial beds that are the responsibility of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. Implement horticultural tasks required to maintain evolving operations in conservatories and greenhouses.

Knowledge of a wide range of Horticultural science
Knowledge of pest identification and control methods.
Knowledge of plant propagation techniques, plant identification, Arboriculture and Soil Science.
Basic building maintenance, operations, services, and activities of a public garden program.
Principles of volunteer management and educational programming.
Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluations of staff and volunteers.
Basic computer skills including experience in word processing software.
Skills to be organized, creative and effective in a chaotic environment.
Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to be resourceful and creatively stretch limited funds.
Ability to give presentations to the public on the activities of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens.
Skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Skills to carry out goals, objectives, and procedures of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens.
Skills to respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
Skills to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Skills to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to research information and analyze data to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations and plans of action.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB Required:
Demonstrated experience in horticulture science, greenhouse production, and/or landscape maintenance.
Wyoming Pesticide Applicator’s License must be obtained one year from date of hire.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Botany or a related field and four years of working experience in a greenhouse horticulture/agriculture position. Special consideration will be given to applicants that have a high level of energy, creativity, skills, and experiences working in public gardens, museums, schools, youth programs, and event coordination.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio‑visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 45 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
Working Environment: Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; cold, warm, humid, hot air may regularly occur; exposure to radiant energy and inclement weather; exposure to fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, and pest control agents. Outdoor environments in different seasons. Work irregular hours including weekends throughout the year.
