Academic Advisor - Padnos College of Engineering Advising Center
Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Padnos College of Engineering (PCE) is seeking a full‑time Academic Advisor to support our engineering and occupational safety and health management programs. The position is subject to funding approval. Successful candidates must be able to engage effectively with students, colleagues and community members from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
Primary Duties
Advise students enrolled in majors and minors within PCE in an inclusive and welcoming manner that facilitates student success, persistence, and timely degree completion.
Participate in advising, orientation and registration of first‑year, international and transfer students, and the matriculation of prospective students.
Serve as main advising facilitator for the Engineering Living‑Learning Community, in cooperation with EGR LLC faculty director. Responsibilities include purchasing materials, data collection, advertising and attending Monday evening EGR tutoring sessions as advising support.
Support K‑12 and community outreach activities that promote awareness of careers and opportunities available in PCE programs, including occasional evenings and weekends if needed.
Disseminate GVSU policies, procedures, program requirements and available resources to students.
Maintain confidential advising records.
Perform other duties as required/assigned by the Advising Center Director.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year university and at least one year of relevant experience in a higher education setting.
Familiarity with current trends and best practices in academic advising.
Efficient organizational and time‑management skills.
Experience using collaborative approaches to planning and problem solving.
Positive approach to customer service.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with students, faculty and staff.
Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively as a key member of a vibrant team.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Earned master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field.
Demonstrated experience in academic advising within a higher education setting.
Familiarity with GVSU PCE majors and programs.
Experience supporting students seeking admission into a rigorous undergraduate and/or combined degree program.
Experience managing and facilitating student events.
Familiarity with computer information systems and web‑based records and registration, particularly Banner, Degree Works, EAB Navigate, and/or Workday Student.
Salary & Benefits Minimum starting salary of $50,000; commensurate with experience.
