Nature of Work FORESTER 3 – WAYNE COUNTY. Under limited supervision, works at the full‑performance level with specialization in technical and field work. Primary responsibility is forest management in Wayne County. Duties include fire prevention, preparedness, and suppression; delivering fire prevention messages to media, groups, schools and individuals; recruiting, training and checking the equipping of forest fire wardens, patrollers and firefighters; supervising and directing forest fire suppression efforts and investigating forest fires. Conduct spot checks and investigate logging‑operation complaints, assist in logger training, and aid in adherence to the logging sediment control act. Provide assistance to landowners with technical advice, stewardship plans and insect‑and‑disease report checks. Provide assistance to other agencies and employees as required. Performs additional duties as requested. As a condition of employment, a job‑related information inquiry will be conducted, including criminal records, abuse registry records, driving records, employment history, education, and training; non‑cooperation or false information results in denial regardless of when discovered.
The position will also be posted as a Forester 1 (FOR2500027) and Forester 2 (FOR2500026). Only one of these three postings will be filled.
Minimum Qualifications
Training: Associate degree in a Forest Technology program recognized by the Society of American Foresters, or a Bachelor’s degree in a forestry program accredited by the Society of American Foresters.
Experience: Three (3) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience in the field of forestry.
Special Requirements: Must have a current license as a registered professional forester or a registered forestry technician, or be in the process of obtaining professional licensure; must have a valid driver’s license; must take and pass a physical examination within the first six (6) months and submit to annual follow‑up examinations; failure to pass an initial examination will result in termination, and failure to pass a subsequent examination may result in reassignment. Positions must also qualify for and become a Special Natural Resources Police Officer at the earliest opportunity and maintain the commission throughout employment; this requirement may be waived at the discretion of the State Forester.
