Rush University Medical Center, a nationally recognized clinical and academic institution and the teaching hospital for Rush University’s Medical, Nursing and Health Sciences Colleges, invites nominations and applications for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Neurological Surgery.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to clinical and academic service, including the teaching and mentoring of residents, fellows, and medical students. A proven track record of research achievement, collaborative leadership, academic excellence, and community engagement is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have an established national/international reputation and demonstrated ability to implement a strategic vision through innovation, collaboration, and accountability.
Ideal qualifications include an MD or equivalent degree, board‑certified in Neurological Surgery, and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The Chairperson will possess deep commitment to academic innovation and leadership skills necessary to guide faculty development and advancement across clinical, research, and educational missions.
As department leader, the Chairperson will provide an energetic and inventive vision for growing clinical volume, improving clinical productivity, and further defining clinical expertise within the academic framework. In addition, the Chairperson will play a key role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to advance clinical care and promote the growth of translational and clinical research initiatives.
Department Overview The Department of Neurological Surgery at Rush University Medical Center has a long tradition of excellence, recognized nationally for its clinical expertise, innovative approaches, and patient‑centered care. Rush Neurology and Neurological Surgery were ranked seventh in the nation, number one in Illinois by U.S. News and World Report, and have been designated a Blue Distinction Center+ for spine surgery by Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The department provides a full spectrum of advanced surgical procedures to diagnose and treat a broad range of complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions. Rush neurosurgeons offer expertise in open and minimally invasive brain and spine surgery, endoscopic skull‑base surgery, awake craniotomies, stereotactic radiosurgery, and spinal deformity correction. The team also provides comprehensive cerebrovascular care, including surgical and endovascular treatment of aneurysms, AVMs, and stroke. Functional Neurological Surgery services include deep brain stimulation, epilepsy surgery, and pain procedures, while neuro‑oncology experts manage primary and metastatic brain tumors, pituitary and skull‑base tumors, and spinal cord neoplasms.
Strong interdisciplinary collaboration with neurology, ENT, oncology, orthopedics, and critical care ensures integrated, personalized care plans that leverage the latest technologies and evidence‑based practices to optimize outcomes and accelerate recovery.

Compensation and Benefits Pay Range: $1,125,000 – $1,550,000. Rush offers competitive total compensation that includes base pay, benefits, and other incentive programs for employees.
