Your Impact The OSP Field Engineer provides training and supportive engineering services by collecting detailed telecommunications information from job sites. The role requires a working level of knowledge in all technical aspects of fiber networks and includes in‑person validation of existing field designs and layouts of the telecommunications network, encompassing aerial, buried, and underground fiber network design, conduit, handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities. The engineer may serve as an informal lead for junior staff as needed.

Core Responsibilities

Identify, photograph, and document detailed information of required facilities, including cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes, and other outside plant infrastructure.

Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances from existing/proposed OSP facilities to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.

Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.

Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.

Deliver detailed field notes and photographs to the engineering team.

Identify relevant obstructions to fiber placement and propose mitigation strategies.

Understand OSP construction techniques.

Read and understand digital GIS maps, conduit records, and layout drawings.

Utilize tools such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finders, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks, and laser rangefinders.

Operate electronic devices such as iPad, iPhone, laptop, and file‑sharing systems.

Core Experience

3+ years of experience in the fiber‑optic/telecommunications/telecom construction industry.

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Knowledge of outside plant activities (Fiber Cable Design, Pole Line Construction, Conduit System design) and Make‑ready issues.

Experience obtaining right‑of‑ways and easements when required, and ability to annotate field notes for desktop teams.

Ability to read and understand as‑build prints, identify conflicts with existing outside plant facilities, and select routing of lines and equipment.

Familiarity with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), ESRI, and shapefile functionality.

Ability to identify different types of utilities, potential conflicts, and violations based on regulatory standards (RUS, NESC, GO95, NEC, etc.).

Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite.

Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus).

Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation with an acceptable driving record, and ability to pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.

Good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Extensive travel required; ability to work on site for numerous projects across various states.

Work outdoors 95% of the time.

Ability to travel up to 100% of the time by air or vehicle, including overnight stays up to two weeks.

Travel with short notice required.

Follow OSHA/State/Local Safety Standards.

Walk up to 3 miles per day on terrain such as gravel, pavement, grass, etc.

Work in poor weather conditions such as heat, snow, rain, or wind.

Work safely, with or without supervision.

What We Offer Base Pay Range: $24 USD – $29 USD per hour.
