As an Electrician for the Marion VA Medical Center, Marion, IL within the Maintenance and Operations section of the Engineering Service. This position is responsible for the installation, modification, repair, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and loading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, electrical distribution systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.
Duties
Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, tests, and loads new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment, including secondary power distribution lines and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements, to distribution panels, switch gear, power and control circuits; industrial multiphase systems; thermocouple sensors; electrical intrusion alarm and fire alarm system; emergency warning systems; lighting protection systems; high intensity lighting systems with associated controls; target mechanisms; AC and DC rectification systems; galvanic and impressed current cathodic projection systems which prevent corrosion on underground or submerged equipment and pipes; amplifier circuits; and related electrical equipment.
Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls that support industrial operations, computer complexes, or similar complex electrical loads.
Traces hard‑to‑locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and installs wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances.
Removes, replaces, tightens, splices, sells? (solders), and insulates defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures.
Locates defective parts/equipment through visual observation or using test equipment e.g., test lamps, voltage testers, ammeters, and polarity testers. Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment. Completes needed repairs to installed systems, rearranges and hooks up items such as outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, and circuit breakers. Determines location of existing electrical devices and service entrances and places new ones.
Provides labor services, including cleaning, snow removal, or other functions on an urgent need basis.
Physical Requirements Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding, and hydraulic platforms. Incumbent works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty, and hard‑to‑reach locations. The work can involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffoldings, parts, and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent is required to lift and carry items over 50 pounds.
