Position Summary The Mechanical Estimator participates in all aspects of the bid & estimating process. The role involves performing quantity take‑offs, pricing, scoping, and bidding on projects ranging from Healthcare and Central Plant to K‑12, Higher Education, and Commercial.
Key Responsibilities
Perform quantity take‑offs and pricing of mechanical, plumbing, and process piping estimates.
Develop and document logical assumptions during conceptual estimating activities, participate in estimate review, and assist with final assembly of estimates.
Solicit subcontractors during the bidding process and organize information post‑bid for future reference.
Communicate with project leads to clarify scope of work, materials, and schedule requirements.
Conduct reviews of milestone documents to develop and price value‑alternative opportunities, identify scope changes, and recommend adjustments.
Build and maintain relationships with internal clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
Prepare scopes of work for subcontractors and suppliers and coordinate scopes of work across disciplines.
Maintain current, working knowledge of MEP codes and familiarity with sheet metal, hydronic, refrigeration, and plumbing systems.
Document estimating assumptions and compile a final list of clarifications for inclusion with the estimate to the owner.
Assist the project team in developing detailed General Conditions, including a project schedule indicating the timeline of staff, equipment, and assets.
Aid field staff with change‑order pricing when needed.
Attend job walks, take notes and photos for accurate scope of work.
Coordinate with the Procurement Manager on procurement of equipment, subcontractors, and commodities.
Qualifications
Ability to understand and coordinate mechanical systems with other trades.
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineering OR 5 years of equivalent estimating experience.
General knowledge of construction principles, processes, and contractual delivery methods (negotiated/hard bids, GMP processes).
Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Bluebeam, WinEst, and related programs.
Ability to work under tight deadlines with an emphasis on multi‑tasking.
