Senior Specialist Sustainability & Utility Engineer Merck invites qualified candidates to apply for the Senior Specialist Sustainability & Utility Engineer position at our Durham, NC site. This role provides technical support to our energy and utility systems across multiple facilities.

Location and Compensation Durham, NC.

Salary range: $114,700 – $180,500 annually. Eligible for annual bonus and long‑term incentive, if applicable.

Responsibilities

Lead investigations of electrical system excursions and provide input to deviation investigation processes, including root‑cause determination and corrective action recommendations.

Design and implement engineering maintenance, system improvements, and optimizations, providing hands‑on troubleshooting support.

Manage the sustainability portfolio, including regulatory compliance, Net Zero program strategy, business case development, and execution plans.

Perform ongoing monitoring of utility systems, ensuring performance targets and emissions reductions are achieved.

Coordinate and lead cross‑functional teams, including plant engineering, site partners, external vendors, and regulatory agencies.

Develop and update SOPs, maintenance plans, documentation, and training materials.

Participate in shutdown schedules, capital projects, and GMP cleaning activities.

Apply process‑improvement methodologies (Lean Six Sigma, FMEA, etc.) to enhance reliability, safety, and efficiency.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science or related field.

Minimum of five years in production, calibration, or maintenance environments.

Strong planning, scheduling, and time‑management skills.

Excellent oral and written communication.

Experience with SAP plant maintenance and procurement systems.

Proficiency in root‑cause analysis, FMEA, and Lean Six Sigma tools.

Knowledge of utilities generation equipment (boilers, chillers, pumps, HVAC, utility distribution) and cGMP requirements.

Familiarity with CMMS and automation/MES systems.

Professional Engineer licensing (preferred). Green Belt/Black Belt certification (preferred).

Preferred Experience and Skills

Sustainability subject‑matter expertise and related certifications.

Experience managing a program portfolio with strategic initiatives.

Project management experience including change control and equipment qualification.

Methodology knowledge for predictive/condition‑based maintenance (RCM, PdM).

Experience in environmental, health, and safety program implementation.
