$22 an hour, non‑exempt
Work Schedule:
20 hours per week, Monday–Friday (some evenings required)
Organization Overview Since 1893 Henry Street has delivered the most effective compassionate and comprehensive services possible to residents of the Lower East Side. As a multifaceted not‑for‑profit Henry Street provides innovative social services arts programs and healthcare services from 17 locations throughout the Lower East Side. Building upon its legacy for innovation and effective programming Henry Street has grown to offer more than 50 different programs currently making it one of the most comprehensive settlement houses in New York City as well as one of the City’s largest social service agencies.
Job Summary The tax intake associate serves as an on‑site liaison and intake associate for community members accessing tax services at 178 Broome Street Henry Street Settlements Workforce Development Center. The role is customer‑facing providing a direct connection to tax services through Campaign for Working Families (CWF) to members of the Lower East Side community. Training will be provided by CWF. Tax intake certification must be attained online.
Qualifications
Sensitivity towards and ability to work patiently with diverse individuals including but not limited to NYCHA / Public Housing Residents, older adults, English language learners, etc.
Service‑oriented mindset and ability to maintain confidentiality of client data
Comfortable working with clients who have low tech / computer literacy
Tech proficient: Windows, Google databases; scanning and uploading documents; Salesforce & Slack a plus
Clear patient and supportive verbal and written communication skills; comfortable explaining complex processes in simple language
Bilingual strongly preferred – English / Spanish / Chinese / French
Responsibilities
Scheduling and managing an appointment calendar that accommodates client work schedules
Calling clients to confirm appointments
Receiving, meeting and greeting members who have appointments
Completely explaining the tax process patiently and supportively to people who may have never filed taxes; lack tech literacy; may be English language learners, etc.
Collecting, photocopying and scanning paperwork while maintaining the confidentiality of data
Data entry form completion support and document upload
Supporting clients with creating accounts online to process payments to or from the IRS (e.g., IRS account creation and the IDMe process)
Following up with tax preparers and members once intake has been submitted to ensure timely submission to the IRS
Printing completed tax returns for members’ signatures and uploading for final e‑filing
