Position Overview

The Asphalt Plant Foreperson is responsible for the daily operation of the HMA batch or drum plant. The Foreperson will interact with customers, paving forepeople, aggregate and AC drivers, and manage the safe and efficient operation of the HMA production. The Foreperson will also carry out repair and maintenance duties that include cutting, welding, and metal fabrication.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties And Functions)

In charge of the daily operations and upkeep of the plant. Inspect and perform maintenance on plant parts, including:

Accessing and inspecting the bottom and upper baghouse to change bags. Inspecting, maintaining, and replacing dryer flights. Inspecting and cleaning the burner tip and nozzle. Performing other maintenance duties on‑site as required by supervisors.

Learn and operate plant control systems to run the plant and load out asphalt as necessary. Maintain and operate front‑end loaders and other heavy equipment required for asphalt plant production. Ramp all stock piles and load customers safely and timely. Access all areas of the plant for maintenance and repairs. Ensure compliance with regulations affecting asphalt plant production, safety, environmental, state, federal, and company policies. Demonstrate competency with computers and knowledge of Windows‑based programs. Perform welding, fabrication, and electrical duties as required. Detect safety hazards and malfunctions and respond appropriately. Follow directions accurately. Complete daily paperwork, including plant production reports, material produced and sales reports, and nightly deposits from cash customers. For individuals who demonstrate the capability to learn this position within a reasonable amount of time, the company is willing to consider providing necessary on‑the‑job training to meet the role requirements.

Other Requirements

Display a professional and courteous attitude toward co‑workers, supervisors, and the public at all times. Be willing to travel and work away from home when required. Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary. Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time. Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures. Strictly adhere to Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies. Work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required. Maintain timely and regular attendance; employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED; or three to six months of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Reasoning Ability

Apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance; occasionally is required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment

The employee works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, and is regularly exposed to wet, humid, airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud and may require protective equipment.
