About The Role As a Nuclear Core Design Engineer, you will support and develop most nuclear plant types and fuel types around the world to ensure customer success with advances in fuel, core, and next‑generation plant designs. We maintain accountability to Nuclear Safety in a culture that promotes safe operation of the global nuclear fleet. You will report to the Manager – Nuclear Design and work a hybrid schedule based in Cranberry, PA.
Key Responsibilities
Participate in introductory nuclear design specific training leading to a Westinghouse Nuclear Design (ND) qualification.
Embrace the nuclear culture – understand what makes Nuclear special and implement human performance tools and operating experience to produce high‑quality error‑free customer deliverables.
Perform nuclear core design reload calculations using internal and external simulation codes, following internal methodology and design manuals, consulting with experienced peers and mentors.
Interpret the results and work with independent engineering verifiers to produce and deliver quality calculations to operating PWR plants.
Participate in engineering learning seminars to maintain qualification and apply lessons learned and operational experience in core design.
Become a member of a core reload team and work with the nuclear plant customer to provide high‑quality analyses.
Work with teams within Core Engineering (Thermal Hydraulics, Fuel Rod Design, Project Management) and outside CE (Safety Analysis and Licensing).
Examples of the type of nuclear design calculations may include:
Bounding Nuclear Core Calculations, Core Accident Scenarios, Core Loading Pattern Designs
Best Estimate Core Models and Core Monitoring Input
Core Startup Calculations and Low Power Physics Testing Requirements
Economical Models, Estimates, and Engineering Technical Descriptions
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering (not open to other engineering disciplines).
Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
Applicable experience.
Interest in Core Neutronics and Nuclear Fuel Design.
Computer simulation experience preferred, but not strictly required.
The base salary range for this position is estimated to be $58,400 to $73,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications and skills.
