Job Summary Under the direction of the Animal Care Supervisor 2, provide supervision of staff in the Technical Services Unit, and oversee their daily colony assignments supporting technical laboratory animal services for PIs and their research teams in the indoor colony. Technical support services perform a wide range of experimental procedures to PI's ranging from neuroscience and behavior, infectious diseases, reproductive sciences and respiratory diseases. Supervise service technicians, which includes hiring, assigning work, conducting performance evaluations of assigned staff, and handling corrective action up to a Letter of Warning.
Oversee the daily workflow and distribution of work orders for colony operations and PI research support staff assignments, which includes performing work orders for experimental projects, indoor colony preventative health activities (morning/afternoon health management), breeding, animal training and conditioning, and animal transportation offsite and/or indoor relocations. Provide daily management of colony preventive health care activities and care programs and assure regulatory compliance with GLP standards and the implementation of infection control practices.
Work with PIs to develop new lab animal technical and experimental procedures and train technicians in those new procedures, IACUC protocols, and SOPs. Assure quality and control and assurance of all work performed and services (work order activities) meet faculty and researchers research support needs and assist all aspects of indoor colony animal care and husbandry workflows to assure ongoing regulated care and welfare of non‑human primates used in biomedical research.
Day‑to‑day responsibilities also include environmental maintenance, and monitoring in support of colony operations, employee training and safety, and assist in compliance management, in addition to performing Senior‑level Animal Technician tasks: Provide research technical support by assigning/responding to scheduled colony and experimental work orders, performing routine animal care and administering IM injections, performing venipuncture, sample collection of nonhuman primates, and to recognize changes in physical appearance or abnormal behavior of nonhuman primates. Hand catch capture and restrain primates. Chair train primates to sit in restraint chair for technical procedures. Assuring technical support activities with experimental procedures are completed with quality assurance. Employee may be required to work with animals/tissue that is infected with HIV/SIV virus, and other experimentally used agents.

Minimum Qualifications
AALAS certification at the LAT or LATG level or equivalent experience in working with nonhuman primates in performing experimental procedures.
Bachelor's degree in animal sciences and / or equivalent experience / training.
Experience in the concepts of applied program operations management in animal care, husbandry, and compliance monitoring management.
Experience in supervising daily operations of animal husbandry activities and assigning related work, training, and technical support; Supervisory experience that includes, recruitment and selection, training, directing and evaluating subordinate staff work performance, taking necessary and appropriate corrective action, and facilitating positive performance management strategies and discipline to effectively train and manage technical staff in a large research and animal facility to include combination of supporting complex research animal work environment, project management, and customer service in the implementation of animal care and procedures.
Experience in applied basic biology, preventative health management practices, infection control management, and research practices in the implementation of IACUC lab animal science protocols and SOPs governing the use of teaching/research animals; Experience and training in biosafety conditions level 1-3. Animal care experience to include experience in specialized housing techniques and working with complex animal models such as non-human primates; Experience recognizing changes in animal physical appearance or behavior; Experience assessing the condition of animals and making the appropriate judgment to determine when an animal requires veterinary attention.
Applied knowledge of regulations pertaining to husbandry of research animals including UC campus policy and procedures, USDA and AAALAC.
Journey-level knowledge and experience as a Senior Animal Technician, including technical expertise in all areas of primate husbandry, experimental procedures, quarantine, animal laboratory safety, health, handling techniques, and breeding programs and training in administering IM injections, standard dosing procedures including IM, SUBQ, ID and performing venipuncture and sample collection of nonhuman primates as well as biohazard containment procedures necessary for performance in BioSafety Level (BSL) 2 or 3 indoor facility.
Applied knowledge of State and federal laws related to animal care; Applied knowledge of animal shipping conventions and quarantine requirements; Familiarity with the different types of diagnostics available for infectious diseases.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience handling and training primates, including capture and physical restraint of macaques.
Experience in performing both complex and advanced animal technical support and para‑veterinary techniques including injections and administering medications.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with subordinates, peers, supervisor, investigators, UCD support services staff, research staff and veterinarians. Business writing skills to compose reports, business letters, and required correspondence for all personnel matters.
Knowledge of Primate Center's Standard Operating Procedures to record data in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice Guidelines.
