Chemical Process Safety Engineer
Georgia‑Pacific Brewton Containerboard Facility, Brewton, AL. Georgia‑Pacific is seeking a dedicated and experienced Chemical Process Safety Engineer to join our Brewton Containerboard facility. In this critical role, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive process safety programs and management systems. Your efforts will ensure compliance with OSHA 1910.119, EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP), and Georgia‑Pacific’s Chemical Process Safety standards. What You Will Do
Develop your technical and leadership capabilities through the management of risk assessment strategies and opportunities for risk reduction
Participate in Risk Assessments (PHAs, Project Design Reviews, Design Operation and Maintenance, Prevention through Design)
Develop and update process safety guidelines and risk assessment tools
Develop expertise with the Chemical Reactivity Hazard Management electronic tool
Lead by influence through participating and facilitating group discussions, knowledge sharing, and presentations
Foster process safety ownership within the organization through leadership, coordination, and coaching in keeping with risk‑based process safety and Principle‑Based Management
Assist S&H leadership with the development of short and long‑term process safety objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that prioritize and mitigate risks
Provide analysis of process safety incidents and near misses to assure sustainable corrective actions are implemented and detailed technical direction to improve process safety performance
Review and provide metrics to monitor process safety compliance
Evaluate training systems for effectiveness and make recommendations for improvement
Coordinate the engineering review capability for PHAs, MOC, and PSSR
Provide oversight for the mill’s process safety information including P&ID’s, PFD’s, chemical compatibility matrix, etc.
Provide chemical process safety support and expertise to the mill’s Emergency Response Team (ERT)
Serve as a mentor for technical and hourly employees to make process safety an everyday mission for continuous improvement in daily operations
Participate in on‑call rotation as needed (approximately once every 8 weeks, may include one holiday per year)
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree and/or experience in manufacturing
Experience in process safety, process engineering, or manufacturing operations
What Will Put You Ahead
Experience and knowledge of how manufacturing processes work and basic equipment operation within the processes
Experience in heavy manufacturing and/or chemical processes in a pulp and paper facility
Working knowledge of Process Safety regulations 29 CFR 1910.119 and 40 CFR 68
The Brewton Mill The Brewton Mill produces white top linerboard and solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard. The SBS material is used to make GP’s Dixie plates.
