Dimensional Engineer, Body in White, Semi
Tesla Motors, Inc., Nevada, Iowa, United States, 50201
What to Expect
The Dimensional Engineer is a hands‑on and analytical role responsible for supporting dimensional quality and body accuracy within the Body in White (BIW) shop throughout the product lifecycle. This position focuses on applying dimensional standards, performing measurement and data analysis, and supporting dimensional improvements to achieve fit, finish, craftsmanship, and functional requirements.
The Dimensional Engineer collaborates closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Sustaining Engineering, Controls, Maintenance, Metrology, and other cross‑functional teams. The role includes performing dimensional investigations and supporting Design, Process, and Manufacturing groups to validate part quality and tooling or setup changes. This position requires reviewing manufacturing processes, current build quality, and part and assembly designs to identify variation, support root cause investigations, and help implement corrective and preventive actions.
This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to balance shop‑floor support with data‑driven analysis to maintain and improve BIW dimensional performance.
What You'll Do
Analyze BIW part and assembly measurement data using dimensional software tools (e.g., CM4D, Polyworks, Dataloop) and perform dimensional investigations to identify sources of variation and support root cause analysis
Support Design, Process, and Manufacturing teams in validating part quality, tooling changes, and setup modifications
Create and review dimensional reports based on design requirements and tolerance reviews; prepare presentations summarizing dimensional trends, risks, and recommended actions for cross‑functional teams
Provide daily production support for dimensional and quality concerns, assisting with short‑ and long‑term countermeasures
Support development, execution, and improvement of dimensional control plans and PFMEAs for BIW processes
Conduct and analyze Gauge R&R, correlation, and linearity studies on measurement equipment; support gauge, fixture, and checking aid setup, qualification, and validation
Assist in dimensional stack‑up analysis and variation reduction initiatives within the BIW shop
Participate in root cause analysis and 8D problem‑solving activities related to dimensional issues; work with Metrology to ensure measurement data meets control plan requirements
Support validation of new measurement equipment to meet dimensional standards and assist in maintaining geo accessories, fixtures, shims logs, change logs, and other dimensional documentation
Support new product launches, line modifications, and continuous improvement activities within BIW
What You'll Bring
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
3+ years of experience in dimensional engineering, manufacturing engineering, or quality engineering, preferably in a BIW or automotive manufacturing environment
Working knowledge of GD&T principles, datum strategies, and tolerance analysis
Hands‑on experience with dimensional measurement systems (stationary or portable CMMs, laser trackers, 3D scanners)
Experience with dimensional data analysis and reporting tools (CM4D, Polyworks, or equivalent)
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and experience with CAD tools (CATIA preferred)
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a quality‑focused mindset
Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to present technical information clearly
Mechanical aptitude and hands‑on experience supporting tooling, fixtures, or production equipment
Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, cross‑functional manufacturing environment and willingness to support off‑shift, launch, or weekend activities as required by production needs
