Overview The Appliance Mechanic position is located at the United States Army Base at Fort Meade, MD. Core working hours are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Compensation is $34.51 per hour. The role is full‑time, non‑exempt, with eligibility for overtime pay as required. The position requires pre‑employment criminal background checks, government security clearances, and drug testing.

Key Responsibilities

Installs, services, and repairs stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, and other electrical household or commercial appliances.

Uses hand tools, test equipment, and wiring diagrams to follow manufacturer’s specifications.

Connects appliances to the power source and tests meters such as wattmeters, ammeters, or voltmeters, examining readings and inspecting appliances during operating cycles for vibrations, overheating, leaks, and loose parts.

Disassembles appliances, examines mechanical and electrical components, and traces electrical circuits using an ohmmeter, cleans parts with wire brushes, buffers, and solvents, and removes carbon, grease, and dust.

Replaces worn or defective parts (switches, pumps, bearings, transmissions, belts, gears, blowers, wiring), repairs and adjusts motor components, reassembles appliances, and lubricates moving parts.

Troubleshoots, services, and maintains commercial kitchen appliances, refrigeration systems, ice machines, steamers, cooktops, ovens, and food‑processing equipment.

Troubleshoots HVAC control components to identify design or operational deficiencies, researches and orders OEM/universal replacement parts, repairs or replaces defective equipment, tests circuitry for continuity, and reassembles and tests after repairs.

Inspects and tests systems to verify compliance with plans and specifications, discusses malfunctions with users, records and reports faults or deficiencies, and recommends preventive and general maintenance procedures.

Layouts and connects electrical wiring between controls and equipment according to diagrams, installing auxiliary components such as expansion and discharge valves, air ducts, pipes, blowers, dampers, flues, and stokers.

Follows blueprints, studies design specifications, and uses manufacturer recommendations to determine the configuration of heating or cooling equipment components.

Installs, connects, and adjusts thermostats, humidistats, and timers.

Generates work orders.

Performs related duties as needed or assigned.

Physical Qualifications

Must stand or walk 50% of work time; sit 50% of time.

Must lift or carry up to 100 pounds and be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach.

Requirements are necessary for handling chemicals, supplies, and equipment.

Qualifications

High school diploma and at least two (2) years of trade‑specific HVAC‑R education.

Four years of HVAC‑R experience and proficiency in reading electrical schematics.

Familiarity with commercial kitchen appliances, refrigeration freezers, and refrigeration units.

Ability to understand written and verbal instructions in English.

Considerable knowledge of practices, tools, equipment, and techniques associated with the trade.

Must pass required government background checks, criminal background checks, and drug testing.
