HF Sinclair . The Fixed Equipment Engineer provides technical engineering support to ensure reliable and safe operations of plant fixed and fired equipment. Responsibilities include mechanical engineering support for process plant equipment such as pressure vessels, fired heaters, heat exchangers, valves, piping, and tanks.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, manage, and participate in programs, methods, systems, and practices for maintaining a safe work environment.
Carry out all work activities in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations.
Perform duties in adherence with company procedures, standards, and specifications.
Perform and/or review Fitness for Service assessments for fixed equipment.
Provide technical engineering support for fixed equipment inspection and risk‑based assessments.
Monitor fixed equipment performance and make recommendations to improve reliability and reduce cost.
Provide engineering proposals on routine replacement of equipment to correct maintenance problems or for the improvement of fixed equipment. Supervise the installation of such equipment.
Provide technical support to production and maintenance organizations throughout the plant to evaluate and resolve fixed equipment maintenance problems.
Provide training to production, maintenance and technical departments in the proper operation and maintenance of fixed equipment.
Keep current on new technology and equipment and evaluate same for use in plant.
Attend technical meetings and seminars to maintain and improve skills as related to their discipline and areas of maintenance management.
Assist capital projects group as needed with Fixed Equipment design and specifications review (material selection, heat treatment, welding processes, inspection & testing requirements, etc).
Prepare capital appropriations, develop equipment turnaround work scope, conduct risk assessments and document changes in procedures and standards.
Resolve a variety of complex problems, (i.e. conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, difficult coordination requirements), and solve technical problems related to projects, troubleshoots and updates report data for business unit(s) depending on assignment.
Develop, implement and evaluate preventive maintenance programs.
Experience & Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of progressive engineering experience.
Preferred refinery or petrochemical industry experience (FCC, CCR, Alky, Sulfur unit, Delayed Coking, Lubes Processing, Hydrotreating).
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (preferred).
Required Skills
Familiar with API Recommended Practices regarding Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes.
Proficiency with ASME Section I and Section VIII, B31.1 (boiler piping) and B31.3 (process piping), API 510, 570/571, 580/581, 650/653.
Familiar with quantitative risk management tools and techniques.
Familiar with all common NDE methods used in the petrochemical industry.
Supervisory Responsibility May be responsible for the supervision of personnel as well as contractors.
Work Conditions Office and plant based with up to 10% travel required. Subject to varying weather conditions and required to work in all temperatures, including outdoors.
Physical Requirements Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceiving color differences. Required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards are not permitted). Ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, valid state driver’s license and proof of insurance required. Job conditions may require making precise hand and finger movements, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, and working in confined spaces as permitted.
