Electrical Systems Engineer – Kratos Defense and Security Solutions

Job Description 5‑D Systems, a KRATOS Company, is a growing defense contractor headquartered in Round Rock, TX with over twenty years of experience providing systems and software engineering for unmanned aircraft systems and systems engineering technical support to government program offices. 5‑D Systems seeks a highly motivated candidate to support design and analysis of turbomachinery power generation components, and electrical power and communications subsystems of unmanned aircraft vehicle propulsion systems. The candidate will work with engineering, industry primes, and DoD customers to research, develop, test, and document component and hardware improvements, performance testing, and advanced engineering problem‑solving for multiple programs and applications.

Key Responsibilities

Technical leadership across all phases of the development lifecycle.

Designing new ways to improve turbine‑generated electrical power to develop or improve electronic components, software, engine accessories, and turbine engine‑powered systems.

Analyzing customer air vehicle electrical system requirements, capacity, power budgets, component cost, and project needs to support project planning/management and systems engineering functions.

Performing detailed calculations to compute design, manufacturing, testing, and installation specifications.

Overseeing third‑party design, assembly, and testing to ensure the product as built meets the requirements.

Developing validation and acceptance testing procedures for electronic equipment and define operation and maintainability concepts.

Inspecting electronic equipment, instruments, and systems to ensure they meet standards and requirements.

Evaluating systems, troubleshooting, and recommending repair and/or design modifications.

Planning and developing applications and modifications for electronic properties used in parts and systems to improve technical performance.

Creating and delivering technical presentations for design reviews and system engineering technical reviews (SRR/PDR/CDR) both internally and to external customers.

Communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Experience and Skills Basic Qualifications

9+ years’ experience and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Proficiency and practical knowledge with AC and DC electrical theory, electric motors, permanent magnet generators/alternators, power generation, and electrical system instrumentation, controls and communication as they relate to gas turbine engines and propulsion systems.

Skills in developing analytical models and providing effective analysis results.

Skills in using electronic and analog test equipment to make measurements and troubleshoot electronic components and systems.

Skills in interpreting simulation and test data and arriving at practical solutions.

Skills in processing numerical data, conducting data reduction and preparing technical findings and reporting.

Knowledge of electrical design/CAE tools and analysis methods.

Skills in engineering software applications (CAD, FEA, LabView, C++, etc.).

Experience working in engineering R&D, test laboratories, engine test cells, and flight test ranges.

Technical and hands‑on proficiency with instrumentation, test equipment, and data acquisition systems.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills to support drafting and delivery of reports and deliverable data products.

Excellent interpersonal skills: experience integrating work in a team, interfacing with customers.

Desired Qualifications

Advanced engineering degree and specialized power generation/electronics experience.

Strong understanding of industry state of the art capabilities and practical design limitations.

Programming ability in MATLAB, C++, Python, and/or other industry‑standard scripts.

Experience with technical disciplines to include but not limited to: Aerodynamics, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Computer Science & Programming, Data Analysis, Flight Testing, and Flight Operations.

Familiarity with serial communication protocols (RS‑422/485, etc.) and controls systems.

Familiarity with electronics/software and EMI/EMC qualification testing standards (MIL‑STD‑810/DO‑160, MIL‑STD‑461, MIL‑STD‑464, DO‑178, etc.).
